Wondering if anyone has a definitive list of parts needed for freshening up the front spindles on a 3rd gen 4runner? I know I need new front wheel bearings but the parts diagrams show all kinds of other seals, snap rings, spacers, etc. I'm having a shop press out the old stuff and press the new stuff in and I don't want to buy less than what is needed for the job. Conversely, I don't want to waste money on things that are easily reused and not needed. I've been looking at this diagram:


I've got a 4wd with ABS, just get everything up to the hub?

From the attached file, it looks like you'll need to replace all of them. but there's no mention about new abs sensors & spacers, but the outer and inner seals need to be replaced as well as the snap rings.

haven't replaced the ones on mine so i don't know if the bearings, snap rings, and seals can be replaced without damaging the abs sensors and spacers.

Thanks again KZN. I'll just go ahead and get new seals, snap rings, and bearings and cross my fingers that the ABS stuff can be re-used. My ABS has been disconnected for about 8 years now so I'm really not worried about that stuff anyway. I'll let y'all know how it went when I get everything built up so we can put this to rest.

Do your wheel bearings show the typical signs of wear, or are you doing this for preventative maintenance?

I'm at 273,000 miles - original bearings at all four corners.

My front bearings are whining pretty bad and have play in them.

As to my earlier question, I checked Alldata and their parts diagram shows non reuseable parts being the rear oil seal, bearing, snap ring, and outer oil seal. I'll post up part numbers when everything arrives as well as a scan of the parts diagram showing the info.

You definitely don't need all the parts shown there. I did this not too long ago, and the bearings and c-clips (43511F) were the only things I replaced. There are a couple that you need to be careful with though. The seals 43511G/43511F which are actually the same PN, and 43501F/43502F which are also the same PN need to be removed very carefully so as to not bend them out of shape. I was able to do this no problem, and my rust is about as bad anyone's has been that hasn't scrapped their 4R. If a shop is doing it, then you should tell them you intend to re-use those parts so they shouldn't just rip them off, even better would be to actually watch them do the work (If they'll let you).

Also, make sure they grease the rubber on the seals before re-installing.

So I finally got the old guts pressed out of the spindles. The shop warned that they might not be able to save the seals and ball joints but I wasn't worried since I wanted to rebuild everything new anyway.

Here is what I bought:

90369-54002 Wheel Bearing $86.02
90312-95001 Seal $19.80
90521-99114 Snap Ring $6.72
90316-69001 Seal $47.12

I'm re-using my hub, spacer, and ABS doo-hickey as well as the ball joint on my Light Racing UCAs. I also bought two each of the above parts since I'm building both of my spindles. The guy at the shop that pressed everything out of the spindles told me I could probably re-use some of the old stuff but I opted to freshen everything up and save headaches down the road. Prices listed are Toyota list price, it helps having an employee discount when buying OEM parts though.

cant you just buy a new hub assembly with all new bearings etc already to bolt on?

I don't think there is a PN for an entire knuckle assembly, but if there was, it would be super expensive. You'd have to replace everything from the UBJ to the LBJ because the hub is pressed into the knuckle. That's alot of parts to replace just to get to the bearing.

Patty went with lots of new stuff, but I did it with just new bearings and c-clips, which ran a total of about $120 for both sides, that's pretty cheap compared with what 2 new knuckle assemblies would cost (no aftermarket for knuckles to my knowledge, you'd have to go OEM).
