Hey all. Im seeking some help. Ive got a decent amount of mechanical work behin me, and i need to change the front rotors and pads on a 93 2wd 4runner. However, i went to take off the wheel, and i see its got an extra hub or something over the brake rotor. Whats the deal with this, and how do i get it off? Any tips of the pads as well? Is there anything funky about them?

Also, does anyone know if there is an on-line "how-to" or installation page or anything on the front brakes for this things?

it should be easy to take the pads off....loosen the clip over the top of the caliper then loosen the little clip the hold the pins. Remove the pins..then use a flat head to expand the brake. Out comes the pads.

Your rotors are bolt on to the hubs. you can have your rotor turns without taking the rotors off. If you have to change it then, you need to loosen the rotor from the hub. You might as well take it off and re pack the inner/ outer bearings with grease also.

its the same as pretty much any 2wd vehicle... they all use hubs like that... to get them off, you must remove the cotter pin, take of the castle nut and remove the big nut under it, then pull on the rotor and it will come off... if you need to replace or turn them, you will want to repack or replace both the inner and outer wheel bearings and also replace the grease seal on the backside if the inside bearing was removed/repacked/replaced

Thanks for the help guys. Yeah i need to remove the rotors as i already bought some replacements. This will only be for the front.

I will be selling the car soon however, is there any chance i can just get away with replacing the rotor and not the bearings?

How exactly would i go about repacking the wheel bearings?

well there are several methods people use to repack bearings... its hard t oexplain really, i have a bearing packer that i bought at napa for $5... however anotehr way i do it is to put a huge lump of grease in yuor hand and run the open cage of the bearing into it several times until the new grease gushes out the other side.... also you can jsut repack the bearings... however, you should replace the grease seal, you dont always need to, if you know what you are doing, but it is best to replace that... they are under $10 for the pair....

If you replace the bearings wont you need to replace the races too? (they typically come as a set anyways)

How do you get the old races out and the new ones in on the 2nd gen 2WD hub?

you ca nreplace the races if you want, however in most cases unless its damaged, i would jsut leave it there.... also, as far as the bearings go, unless they are damaged, its common practice to jsut clean them and repack them.... a bearing puller or a shop press does come in handy, but i have done it without using an air hammer and a big block of wood and a mallet to drive the new race in
