Found a set of wheels i want to buy for my 4runner. Got a question though

Hi,

I came across an ad for a set of TRD rock warrior wheels for 700! It has BFG ko's on it but the rubber is worn. Not a whole lot of tread left. I still think it's a steal deal cuz they go for 1k easily. Thing is, it has a 5 lug pattern when 4runners is 6... So I would need a wheel adapter and since i'm not mechanically booksmart i have some questions down below

Who is using a wheel adapter? Is it safe to use? A friend said "adapters/spacers are a no no"..... Still he's not clear. What are the pros/cons?

From what I've read so far, In order to run large tires on 4runners, we would need spacers. So the wheel adapter would act as a spacer. I'm thinking maybe 1.75 should be plenty to keep the tires from rubbing on the a arms.
Do you have a recommendation for a particular wheel spacer/adapter?


My plan for my 4runner upgrades (for this spring/early summer) is a good 3 inch suspension lift + reasonable large tires. I'm debating on jumping on that deal and hang on to it till i have enough money for a lift and large tires. OR Stick with standard 6 lug and spend little more on black wheels like a FJ cruiser trd wheels or something like that. The TRD rock warrior wheel craigslist ad caught my attention though.

You could run the wheel adapters, but I would hold out for correct 6 lug wheels.

Bro, sadly Id let them go. Or buy them and sell off the wheels and keep the tires.

Wheel adapters and spacers are not a good thing usually. I honestly would only run a 1/2 spacer at most and I still do not like them things. Id find wheels with a different offset that works.

I honestly like the FJ cruiser wheels or the new tacoma wheels alot, very nice looking. Do realize that if you lift it and put 33" tires on the 4Runner it will need a gearing change depending on how you drive. I can feel the difference with 16" wheels and 32" tires vs 15" wheels and 31" tires (actual tires measure 31.7" and 30.5" respectively btw) and Im geared enough for it.

Nothing wrong with running spacers or adapters as long as they are installed properly. I sold more wheel spacers when I was at All-Pro than anything else.

Here's a set, but I don't know how reputable the manufacturer is.

Sadly i might have to pass up on that craigslist post. Wished it had a 6 lug pattern, otherwise i would've had a steal deal. Yeah the FJ cruiser rims has my attention.

I read somewhere that on 98 auto v6 with stock lockers, wont need regearing for a 33 tires - 285/75/16. I'm currently using 31 - 265/70/16 with hankook tires. Only down side is that i'd loose a little bit miles per gallon of gas used and feel a little loss in power. Think i have 4.30 gear ratio.... not sure!

Toytec ultimate lift kit has been on top of the list for a little while now. bilestien 5100 + superflex coils. Absolutely cannot wait to lift it and put on 285/75 duratracs. The rear end sag is bugging the ˟˟˟˟ out of me. Plus when i haul my trailers, it feels like my hitch would hit the ground on little bumps lol.

I hear ya Scuba on them being ok, I just am not a big fan. Just a possible point of failure that doesnt have to exist unless you need them.

bvet I wish i lived closer and could help ya out, we could bang out that lift in a few hours

I honestly like my 265/75R16's, come out to be about 31.7x10.5. Your 265/70/16 is closer to 30". I can run 33's/285s no problem on my truck if i took off the mud flaps tho..no lift lol..

thank you for that link! My code is A04A/ . So according to that link, i have 4.56 gear. Now that is weird cuz i thought all 4runner v6 4x4 with factory lockers do have 4.30?

Me too buddy, i wish we were closer. I know we'd have a good time doing whatever. lol and i'd love to have you to help me out!

Yeah i like my 265 tires too but imo it feels a tad bit on the small side. I read on this forum that 3" lift on 4runner, we should be able to run 33's with a small spacer (think it's called spidertrax company) or find wheels with the right offset and have no issues. Although yeah on stock wheels, we would have to do a little hammering / modification on the fire wall + pinch welds. Think i may be settling on 285 or a skinny 33. Just gotta keep saving so i can do it all up at once. Really wished that TRD rock warrior wheels i found were 6 lugs and i'd have it already. Oh well, i'm still keeping my eyes out for another good deal.

I say you run 285s, the thinner width tires go through the snow way better and track better. Wider tires Ive found grab the road crown and the snow bad.

Hop under the truck and mark the driveshaft and spin it with the back jacked up and count. Should come around a full revolution about 4.5 times. Id say 4.56 would be odd, but ya never know.

Found another site: http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/toyot...es-urgent.html says 4.30 ratio.

It is possible if you have a 4cyl to have the 4.56, but unlikely if you got the v6.

Hmm okay, I'll have to try that later when i get the jacks back. If it's true 4.56....... then awesome! i wont have to regear haha

Would be sweet! Call your local dealer and give them the vin and also be prepared to give them the tag info on the door jamb. They know for damn sure what ya got.

When I looked up my VIN up on Toyota parts zone it's displayed my ratio in the axle part sections, 4.10. I'm pretty sure toyota made those lockers for more then 4.30 found a 4.10 locked 3rd member from a 3RD Gen from Toyota out here in CO.

Checked in at the Toyota dealer today. The guy behind the counter said 4.30 . Maybe http://www.brian894x4.com/Gearratiosanddiffs.html needs an update on their list.

I think I'll be alright on 4.30 gear with 285 / 305.

All i gotta do now is find me some stuff for a good deal. Keeping my eyes out. If any of you know of a group buy thing going on, sale, coupons, or up coming sale.... don't hesitate to post Love to save cash when i can.

wheels maybe 800? really like FJ black wheels and i do like how D window wheels with 305's tires appear on 4runners.

I could buy the lift right now and put it on. But it'd look funny with stock 265 tires lol. So i'm going to wait and save some more, then do it all up at once. In the mean time, if any of these items above are for sale somewhere for less, let me know and i'll buy!

PS: hey CJM, maybe after this build. I'll focus on the 450r
