finally installed slotted rotors
well i finally replaced my warped rotors with some Power Slot slotted rotors. i can finally brake without my whole rig shaking.

The big question
OK, here's the big question: do you think you stop more quickly now? I drive my mom's land cruiser around sometimes and then when I hop into the 4Runner it feels like the brakes don't work! Not literally but you get the point. I tried upgrading to fully metallic pads but that did nothing but create more brake dust. They just can hold up to higher temperatures like if you're going down a lot of mountains, no increase in stopping ability. If I ever mess with it again it will be the powerslot rotors and either ceramic or kevlar pads. I don't know enough to do a conversion for the rear drums.

I am a bit frustrated with my stopping power too.
I would do a rear conversion if it was easy and relatively cheap.
I know I have seen them somewhere.....anyone have any brake conversion links?
Drum brakes should have long gone the way of the dodo bird!

I plan on doing a rear brake conversion on my 94. There is a kit from Sky Manufacturing for this. I'm not sure if it will fit a 3rd gen though. The rear suspension between 2nd and 3rd is slightly different but I think the rear drums are the same. Maybe the only difference is ABS. here is a link http://www.pirate4x4.com/productreviews/skybrakes/ . Many people on the pirate board have done rear disks. Just do a search there. I have seen lots of pictures. Look at the link for Sky also. They have pictures under Toyota suspension.

new rotors make a huge difference
Two weeks ago I replaced the rotors in my 4Runner. I didn't use slotted rotors, just normal NAPA rotors that cost $30. The difference is unreal. Very smoothSmooth solid braking.
Well worth the 1.5 hours to replace them and the pads. It took some brute force to seperate the rotors from the wheel though.

Its interesting that there are all these braking complaints when the 4Runner actually stops shorter than a Civic from 60.
But, I am in the same boat, warped rotors.
$127 for each slotted rotor (shipped) is a bit steep. Cant say I would have done the same based on Gadgets findings with the slotted rotors.
Looks like I will have another go at the stock ones.

How much do the OEM ones cost? $30/ea from NAPA is looking pretty good...
Nevermind. I just called Hoover Toyota $99 each.
Napa quoted $72 each.

Depends if, by OEM, you mean Toyota (who knows who is the Original Equipment Manufacturer). In that case they can be had for $75+ (via partznet, perhaps your local dealer. Gadget mentions buying 4 at a time for $50/rotor) plus shipping and/or tax. The NAPA price of 30$ seems like a steal (Don't remember where i got the 55$ price, may have been an Autozone, Advance or pepboys number). iRotors.com has slotted/cross drilled rotors for 75$ plus shipping. No comment on their quality.
I'd like to here some off-road people review thier x-drilled rotors. Seems to me that you should get some dirt/dust escaping the rotor surface via the x-drilled holes as well as the alleged gases.
Unfortunately I won't have an iRotors install review till Saturday and it will take several months, at least, for a quality/durability review.

My local NAPA will machine my rotors for $15/ea - providing of course that they are within tolerances.
Hmmm... Over $200 at the stealer for new, over $100 at the stealer to machine the original ones, or $30 and about 2 hours of labor for me to do it myself....
I wonder which one I'll choose...

Of course when I called them, they only quoted me the more expensive ones... Imagine that.
So, how long have you had them on and how are they performing so far? Any difference in braking ability that you've noticed? What about in smoothness?

I've had them on for two weeks.
Yes, the smoothness can't even be compared....it vibrated a lot before during low speed braking. Now it's smooth as butter.
I don't really know that stopping performance changed at all. It feels very acceptable to me, but I'm a pretty conservative driver anyway.

Is there be much difference between the OEM rotors and the Napa rotors?
My brakes are also warped. I was going to originally use the OEM rotors but if there isn't much difference then I don't see any point in spending twice as much money.
As for having your rotors cut, it's just a temporary fix. My brakes were done right before I bought my truck and they warped within 10K miles of having them done. I think you are better off replacing the rotors.
If any of you guys want OEM rotors, 1st Toyota Parts has the best prices on the internet that I have found.
That's about it.

Anybody know if NAPA, Toyota, or similar will warrantee their rotors for a given period of time?
If I remember right, Toyota has a 12mo/12K warranty, but on rotors it might require their rip-off $450 front brake service.
I have a strange feeling that mine may warp again if I get new ones.

Since I use to work at Napa my rotors are warrantied for life 
that and everything else I buy. But on a serious note I dont think the quality is any less on the Napa rotors than OEM. They should be quoting you the Tru-stop rotors. The only reason you would have to go with the United rotors(the higher priced ones) would be if the tru-stops werent available for your model. which they might not be on the newer yota's. Im not sure what the warranty is on them but if you have problems anywhere within the first year I would think they would take care of you. We always did.....Oh while your at it if your getting pads check to see if the ceramic pads are available for your model. I cant recommend those enough.
