Wow, I cannot believe how easy this was to do and how much better the pedal now works!

I highly recommend this to all those with a 3rd gen manual!

What exactly did you do?
The 'Unhappy' thread talks about 3-4 different variations that folks either liked and/or changed.

I recently did this mod as well... removed the original bushing and clutch spring and replaced it with a Gen2 clutch spring (similiar to the ACE hardware spring Unhappy is using in that write up).

Was an easy fix... clutch pedal is a little stiffer than it used to be, but nothing that would prevent me from doing it again.

I found this forum by searching google to fix this.
I was ready to replace the bushings when I saw the gouged out metal on the spring and realized the bushings are only a patch for the real problem.

My spring was damaged enough that I had to lift the pedal with my foot for the last 1/2 inch to engage cruise control!

I used a spring from my cheapie Harbor Freight assortment and it works great!
How convenient that Toyota manufactured the fix for their problem from the start!

Sounds like a great idea.....I replaced with stock parts, difficult! Think I'll do this next time but hopefully it'll go the next couple hundred thousand miles.

So what are the symptoms that we are trying to eliminate by doing this? How do I know If I need to do it?

Squeak, clutch pedal not returning all the way so cruise won't work, having the oem spring and clutch pedal assembly mutually eat through each other as it was slowly doing to mine.
I stuck a camera up in there and took a few pics, saw the damage and decided to replace stuff. Mirror and flashlight would work as well.
If it works- and it sounds like it does- this is better than what I did because it's a lot less expensive because you don't have to replace the clutch pedal or oem spring and you don't have to deal with trying to get the oem spring back in.

You'll hear some squeaky noises coming from the clutch pedal and eventually the plastic bushing will frag and you'll find pieces of it on your floor mat. This happened to me not long after buying my truck (in '02); I used the 2nd gen return spring fix in Unhappy's thread and haven't looked back.
