I have a 2004 Tacoma.

The other day, someone posted pictures of 2 Toyota service manuals. Here's the thread:

Vol 1 relates to prep/spec/diag.

Vol 2 relates to engine/chassis/Body/Elect/Maint.

Could someone who owns Vol 2 tell me if this would carry most of the info a diyer would need for changing belts, hoses, fluids, filters, plugs, brake pads, wheel bearing repack?

I realize the word "maintenance" is on the cover of Vol 2. I called The 800 toyota number today to order manuals. Seems there are a bunch for my truck. I know I won't get everything I need in Vol 2 - just hoping to get the important diyer stuff.

Went ahead and ordered Vol 1 -> $98.56 and Vol 2 -> $125.71. With .0625 tax and $8 shipping, it came up to $246.29 for both manuals. Up to 4 weeks to deliver - U. S. mail only delivery option.

On another site, someone said they were told by Haynes that post-2000 Tacoma repair manuals would be out later this year. They didn't know when.

Decided to go with the real deal.

Dang man...250 for some manuals??? That seems like a lot...I have yet run into anything that I haven't been able to do with my Chiltons manual. But I guess in the long run those manuals may save you some money...

Not trying to rub it in or anything like that, but here's some friendly advice: before you buy anything, post what you are going to buy. Someone may have it and sell it (or trade) to you for cheap. Or someone may refer you to a cheaper place to buy it.

I bought my FSM manuals for $80 from a member. And that was for all three.

although $250 is a grip of cash, if you plan on doing alot of work yourself its well worth the cash. the fsm is much better than the chiltons and haynes manuals.

Toyota has gotten insane with their FSM pricing. I paid $44 for mine in '85. There is a lot more material to cover, but is it worth 5 times?

I agree with pretty much everything said in this thread.

I didn't shop around because I just bought this '04 Tacoma - it's brand new. I doubt anyone would have a set of manuals for this truck - it's too new.

Some have suggested Ebay. You can get good deals on Ebay and you can get royally screwed. My wife has been down this road. If you ever get ripped off on Ebay, you'll quickly find out that neither they nor Pay Pal will put forth one ounce of effort to help. In the end it was Visa who came through.

I had an '83 22R - 300,000 miles when I got rid of it and it was still purring like a kitten - didn't want to part with it, but let it go to help out a less fortunate relative. The factory manual for that truck was about $50.

I'm the type that will keep a car/truck for 15 yrs. or more, so the manuals will likely pay for themselves over time.

I've had bad luck getting vehicles repaired at either dealerships or independent garages, so I started working on my own yrs. ago.
