expected dealership damage? (parts)
hey all,
i just recently called the dealership for all the parts i need to replace my rings and do a slight rebuild on the bottom end ( i am keeping the same rods and pistons).
the parts i am replacing are:
-piston rings
-thrust washers (how many are there in the engine?)
-rod & main bearings
-headbolts & rod bolts (should i even worry about replacing these?)
so is there some place i can get these cheaper than the dealership for the same quality?
also the guy on the phone said the thrust washers were around $42 ea. is that correct?

I dont know what engine you have but either way look here for good parts at a reasonable price.
Engnbldr web page
he also sells on Ebay
22 R kit
I didnt see a 3.0 offering from him on Ebay. Have to buy that from the web site.

I will tell you from inside knowledge... dealership markup on parts can be as high as 150%. I was working on a friend of mine's truck and he needed a new radiator hose. I get the price from parts, $25. I call Napa and get it for $8. Their excuses? "We have to make a profit somewhere."

sorry for the mass posting but i have alot of questions i would like answered.... for those of you willing to take the time... thanks alot.
my questions:
what are the pro's & con's of overboring my cylinder walls? (.2,.3,.4?)
what else would i need to do to my engine to accomodate the power change (aside from the bigger pistons and rings) ?
will i be able to pass smog in california with my pistons .40 over?
thanks all!

If you can see good "crosshatch" pattern still on the sidewalls, I would slightly hone and put in stock pistons, If you have no crosshatch, or scoring of the cylinder walls, I would bore it to the next oversize and put in new pistons.
You probably wont notice any power change, and yes, you should pass emissions.
We did rings and bearings only and a TRD stage 1 cam. Small power increase until it sucked water and hydrolocked. Bent 2 rods (#3 & 4). Put in 4 new pistons and new rods/rings (still standard bore!) Ran great til deep water bent the rods again. It is not a submarine.
Replaced engine with rebuilt.
