I checked it out, but there is only one 4runner sound clip . I personally like the exhaust page that I believe belongs to Corey. Great sound clips there.

I didn't post this for the sound clips but for the CFM comparison.

Maybe Corey can add it to his page after we redo the chart with only the 2.25" and 2.5" muffler CFM data(applicable to Toyotas)

** I'll start working on something for just 2.25 and 2.5" mufflers..

I searched for CFM data on Magnaflow mufflers but couldn't find anything worth adding to the chart for our purposes.


Does anyone have any info on the exhaust output of the 3.4L Toyota engine at various RPMs???

This way we can select mufflers according to output in CFM rather than just what sounds cool.

Sorry, I realize my last post came off as a little rude. I forgot to add that the cfm part was cool, and a good find/referance. You might be able to email/call magnaflow or even summitracing and find out the different CFM ratings of the different series of mufflers.

Yeah, having that list compressed for 2.25-2.5" would be great to simplify things for us. Also, I was wondering if the 2000cfm really matters, since our engines probably doesn't push anywhere nearthat kind of air through the exhaust. I'm interested to hear some other comments on this and see just a list of the mufflers that would fit our vehicles.

I have a partial one in the works with Flowmaster, Dynomax and Edlebrock brands so far.

I can't find any CFM data for Magnaflow.

Here's what I have so far. The part numbers shown are for 2.25" and 2.5" (offset-inlet/offset-outlet) which seems to be the easiest to fit on the 4-Runners.

That's big differences between them for sure. It looks like the Dynomax ultra flows are the way to go for sure. How'd you come about the numbers that weren't on the original list, or were all these on the original list?

Is the stock exhaust tubing size for our 4runners 2", 2.25" or 2.5" diameter?

Have you ever compared Catalytic converters like this too? I would be interested in these two items for sure.

FYI, good luck getting CFM numbers from Magnaflow. I tried a couple of times, but they would not give me any numbers.


Anyone ever install a Hooker Aero Chamber muffler on their truck? I've got one that I'm about to install on my 86 (22re) 4Runner and I'm wondering if it's going to be loud or not. FWIW, it's got the best CFM ratings (441cfm) for a chambered muffler.

Also, keep in mind that generally any type of straight thru design muffler like the Dynomax UltraFlow get very loud above 2500 rpms so although they flow the best, they are usually a lot louder as well.

Here is some info I found regarding CFM rates of catalytic converters :

From what I understand, there are two types of Carsound cats, one being round shaped and the other oval shaped. The oval shaped cat is said to flow better. Also, FYI, Carsound is made by Magnaflow.


1) Catco (metal core) 2.25" 223.8 cfm
2) Catco (metal core) 2.5" 271.9 cfm
3) Catco (std. core) 2.25" 338.2 cfm
4) Catco (std. core) 2.5" 388.0 cfm
5) Random Tech 2.25" 297.1 cfm
6) Car Sound 2.25" 342.7 cfm
7) Test Pipe 2.25" 407.1 cfm

You were right there was absolutly no response from MagnaFlow.

So if a straight pipe only flows just over 400 cfm, wouldn't it be true that we could get a muffler with about the same or a tad more cfm, and that's as good as it's gonna get, right? Why waste the money on a 1000cfm, if our trucks are limited by the size of the tubing to begin with?

I'm wanting to go with ahigher flow 18" or so muffler so it's not that loud in the cab, but I still get the higher flow. Do I want to look for a muffler that's total length is 18" or the main body is 18"?

The cheapest place I've found the dynomax mufflers it Summit Racing! Has anyone else found anybody cheaper?

Well, I'm looking at two different ones and based on the response I get back from Dynomax on the CFM rating of the 20" one, I'll decide which one to go with. Right now here's the two part numbers:

1) Ultra Flow SS #17271 $101.95 966 CFM 14" body
2) Ultra Flow SS #17286 $139.95 ??? CFM 20" body

I'm not wanting a loud muffler, just one that increases the flow rate for more power. I've got an email in to Dynomax to find out the flow rate of the longer one, and if it's close I'm going to get the longer one for sure.
