Excessive Smoke
Some time ago I wrote asking about a problem I had with excessive black smoke. I now know the problem. I took to the garage and opened the engine. The head had 3 cracks and because of this water was getting into the compression chambers resulting in the block liners going bad. (diesel turbo engine 2.4). Now I have to replace the head and rebuild the block. In Trinidad, a used head cost over 3 thousand dollars, if i can get one, so wish me luck. I still LOVE the Surf though.

Sorry to hear about the head...
Obviously you have internet access, so try to find one on the web. Go to Google and type in "Toyota 2.4 diesel head" and you'll probably get plenty of hits and for less money than $3000.
Good luck!

Thanks for the tip, gwhayduke, however I think may take too long to ship and to have the necessary customs clearances. Not sure how those things work. I think the engine I have is a 2.4 turbo diesel, I am getting engines called the 2L, not sure if it is the same thing. There is also a 3L that some garages say can work with my transmission. I don't want to take any unnecessary chances. I understand that there is some sort of computer onboard that controls the engine and transmission and I don't want to mess it up by changing the entire engine. My Surf is a 1992 Turbo Diesel ssr_x.
