Engine shuts off while on Reverse
Hi!
I have a 98 4runner LTD. Recently I have been having problems with the ignition shutting off while on reverse.
When I back out of the garage, everything is fine. However while I am driving and I back up onto a hill or any other incline - the engine shuts off and I am left with trying to stop my vehilce from sliding into another car using the ebrake until I can start the igniton again.
The igniton starts right back up as if nothing happened. A guy from auto zone said this is typical of older cars...
Does anyone have a similar problem or can provide advice on how I can stop this or repair it?
Thanks

I think that guys is full of *$&%. Typical of older cars? Its a 98, I know of no other 98's that do this. Bad gas mileage, worn parts, and in need of a tune up are things that are typical of older cars, not dying in reverse. Don't ask that guy anything again. ever.
As for any help, does it sputter at all, or just a clean cut off as if you had turned it off? Since it happens when you back up hills, I do wonder if it could be a fuel delivery problem somehow? Or even something as simple as the battery slides a little bit, or something moves, and piches a wire, or shorts out, and dies.

Did you ever find an answer for this problem?
I know this thread is old, but I"m doing like I should and searching before asking!
Mine just did this yesterday for the first time... not happy about it at all...
Thanks,
James
