electric fans for 98 34L

which fan should I convert to? saw a flexilite for sale on this site...S/c runner

I'm running a FAL #210. That's the minimum you'll need on a supercharged 3.4. Check out why here:

Also, apparently even on Blown motors, the Taurus Fan and Volvo S70 Fan with a Hayden fan controller are VERY nice choices.

i work @ a nissan/volvo dealer. one of the recalls volvo has is to replace the electric fans on s80. the recall is due to the temp controller catching on fire. so we have tons of free fans sitting around. the only thing needed is to buy a temp sensor to rid the fan of the old dangerous controller. i bought the Painless adjustable temp sensor from jegs. the great thing about using these volvo fans is the fan shroud from the volvo fans will bolt perfectly to the 2 holes up top where stock fan shroud bolts are on a 3.4l tacoma/4runner. however the 2 lower holes dont match up and will require a simple zip tie on each side.

my friend with a 2001 s runner also uses this fan with an adjustable temp sensor. for the avg. person obtaining a s80 fan isnt as easy. but if you can find 1, i would take it b/c it fits beutifully.

ok thanks for the info...I'll do a search on the taurus/volvo fans and compare to the flex.

looks like i'll call around for an S80 fan and get that device from jegs. any model number for that part? is this still better than flex fans 2400 CFM or ?

Just wondering how big is the Volvo S80 fan? I'm about to do the same thing to my truck to free up some omph.

The electric fan out of a late 90's Lincoln Mark VIII is a heavy-duty choice. It's a beefy bastard, but it's what I'll be putting on my supercharged 4Runner. Also, check into variable controllers from DC Controls, they make great products.

Copied from Corvette forums regarding the Mark VIII fan, I'd say it's a good bet you won't ever have a problem with overheating:

It's an 18" fan. Estimates of CFM are between 4300-5500. Draws 42amps on HIGH speed--it is a 2-speed fan. 1100 rpm in slow, 1850 rpm in fast.
Why a Mark VIII Fan?

For severe cooling needs, the electric fan from the Lincoln Mark VIII provides the greatest airflow. The part number is F8LH 8C607 AA and is available from Houston Performance for $149.00 plus shipping (as of 09/2002). This is a brand new Ford Motorcraft part and has a fan diameter of 18" and a uniquely shaped fan blade. For comparison, the Flex-a-Lite has 16" diameter blades. Of course blade pitch, shape and speed all contribute to air velocity, but the Mark VIII has a 25% increase in surface area.

NOTE: The Lincoln Mark VIII fan will draw continuous currents of 33A@12.0V & 42A@14.4V, and has a starting current in excess of 100A!
Nice thing about the variable controller is the startup current isn't an issue, and the fan won't run 100% all the time, it will only run as fast as it needs to.

42 amps huh? Will you need another battery? what better, the flex alite route or the volvo fan?

The Volvo or Taurus fan route is better than FAL. Better flow, and cheaper! The Taurus fan is estimated at 3000CFM, as is the Volvo fan. If you have an auto tranny with a cooler and live in a hot environment, this might not be enough though.

For the fan I'm going with, I won't need another battery, but I'll probably upgrade my alternator.

EDIT: on another note, I have to ask: do you have fuel mods on your engine? Just feel like opening a can of worms...

If you're going to go through all the trouble of installing an electric fan then get the Volvo S80 one.

... and if that fan can't keep up, you know what you need to upgrade to as well. DEFINITELY look at the DCC FK-35 for your fan controller.

there is the link to the temp sensor i bought. i bought a cheaper one at first and since the volvo fan is so powerful it busted the contacts in the sensor. i wanted a perma cool sensor but they didnt have it in stock so they recommended the cheapo one. the s80 fan like i said lines up the two upper bolts, and has plenty of clearance between the pulleys.

well i was @ my work and i took a few fans before i left. im willing to get rid of 2 of them for $50 each plus shipping. i think one of them stll has the old controller on it, but its easily removed. i have no idea how much shipping would be. but if anyone wants these im sure theyll go fast so send a pm, and we can work out details.

well im selling 2 of them now. theres a line for them between the techs @ my work so everytime one of those fans comes out of the car its already got someone waiting for it. i have had my fair share, 1 is in my truck, 1 is a replacement. and then i have 2 more which i am willing to part with for a lil extra $$. this should be in the classifieds sections, but let me know if you want them.
