ECT mod question

hi all,

I was trying out the ECT mod on my 93 4runner 5spd 3.0L today, but i could not get it to work. on the ECT, there was a green wire with a blue stripe, and the same color wire went into the ECU. Since i don't have an ohmeter or a voltometer, i assumed it was the same wire. I installed a 500ohm potentiometer in series with the wire, but there was no change in idle or engine temp. With the pot all the way to the right, it was idling at 750rpm, and the temp was in the middle or the gauge. I can't figure out what's wrong. Any help I can get is appreciated.

On the 3.0, the ECT sensor is underneath the intake plenum, at the rear of the engine, near the firewall. It's not easy to get to. I don't even know if you can see it. The other one you found is most likely for the gauge. OBDI vehicles sometimes have two coolant sensors like that.

Call a local shop to see if they can tell you what color the wire is at the ECU for the ECT sensor. Make sure to specify which sensor you are inquiring about. The shop manual calls the ECT sensor connection at the ECU "THW". So, ask about the THW connection.

I don't have a manual for your truck, otherwise I would post the relevant information myself.

Hope this helps.

Dr. Z, i read some of your previous posts, and the sensor with the green/blue wire was behind the intake manifold, but if you say its underneath the plenum, i probably have the wrong one. There's a pic of the sensor i think it is, but i might be wrong.

That sensor is_probably_the right sensor. However, without a shop manual or a multimeter to test it, I can't say for sure. Since it did nothing to the idle speed when you set it up, it's possibly not the right sensor or you installed it incorrectly somehow. I think the other item in the 2nd picture is a fuel injector, but it's hard to tell from the fuzzy focus and angle of the shot.

I still suggest what I said previously about contacting a local Toyota shop.

Hope this helps.

I checked my wiring diagram and green/blue is the correct colour. It connects to terminal B4 on the ECU. The ECT sensor should have 2 wires, green/blue and brown/black. The temp guage sender has a one yellow/green wire.

so if the ECT has a green/blue and a brown/black wire, i must have the right one. if thats so, maybe i didn't install the potentiometer correctly. I used the 2nd and 3rd prongs to attach the wires. Does it matter which wire goes on which prong? I guess ill give it another shot today. Thanks for all the help so far.
