E-locker question
What will happen if I put a rear e locker in my 4runner? with out changing the front stock 410 gearing to match the rear 430 gearing?
So I would probably have to find a front 3rd member to match the rear correct?
I'm trying to figure out how to lock my vehicle up the cheapest but strongest way. ARB front and rear are $1600.00 without labor. Does this sound about right?

You are asking for trouble if you do not match the diff ratio's.
Have you considered an Aussie Locker? It is a full time locker without the common side effects. And for $200, you just cant beat it.
It should be out early next year. Try a search also, there is a ton of info on e-locker retrofitting.

Thanks
I though I could ...I have had a hard time finding a 410. Everyone I have found is 430. What do you think it will cost to put one in not encluding the locker itself? I could just hard wire it past the computer couldn't I with a toggle switch?

I was on the hunt for an elocker, but cant seem to find any 4.10's for a decent price. I talked with the guys at 4x4 connection and they are gonna put in an ARB for me for about 1100 out the door. SO i cant wait to get that done. good luck with the elocker

for rear only
1100.00 for rear only..... That seems very high. I had a shop quote me 1780.00 for front and rear and I thought that was high.... Of corse a cheap compressor not ARB's....

How in the world do you have 3.90's? I thought the lowest 4Runners went was 4.10. Anyway deals can be found on the elockers you just need to be patient and keep checking car-part.com.

I got like the most basic 4x4 you could possibly get.
No moonroof, 15" tires, 225/70's.
yea.....I didn't know crap about trucks when I bought her.
anyways, you could regear mine and throw lockers in for me right?

Rear Carrier with 4.30s and e-locker - $400 - $450
ECU, switch, and harness - ?? I got mine for $40
Housing mods - ?? free if you have access to a welder
Misc expenses - bolts, gasket, rtv, etc - less than $50
Labor - do it yourself!
That's around $900 to get better gearing and a rear locker. Less if you can find the diffs and pull em yourself. That's still less than the rear ARB. If you got the moola, throw in the front ARB for another grand or so.

I wasn't sure about the front, but all I need is just a front carrier? Seriously, if it was this easy I would totally do it. But then you've got the labor part where I don't have a clue about.

Swapping out both diffs can be kind of an intimidating project if you haven't done much wrenching, but this could be your chance to become a real shadetree mechanic and learn some skills that come in VERY handy out in the bush. You can be the guy in your group that calmly pulls out his spare CV axle and swaps out the busted part in less than 30 minutes! Do you have any relatives or friends who are gearheads? Make friends with the gearheads at work and bribe them with homebrews or something like that. Try joining a local 4x4 club. I was lucky enough to have a local club guy help me with my first rear diff swap and ARB install just a few years ago. Take that first step under the shadetree and you'll be glad.

the biggest gearhead I know that would know how to do this stuff would be forrest (fpkelly). Now if I was back home in Az. then it'd be a different story, cuz there I would have a good amount of resources to go to. Out here I don't really know many people. And really no local 4x4 clubs in Indiana (at least Toy related) And yes, this project is very intimidating, however, to be the guy that pulls out a spare axle and swaps in in 30 min. would be a dream come true.
edit: I'd even be up for driving to different states to have someone show me how to do the swap, that way I work on my rig and learn everything with help. *hint* *hint*

It took me nine months to get my lockers installed. I found the parts and pounced when the deals showed up. Then I took my time with the wiring. Then the planets aligned and my brother and I swapped out both diffs in just over a day. Be patient, grasshopper, and you will be locked.
