Durabilty of the Auto trans in Tacoma 4x4's

well, as you all know, I am in the process of finding a Tacoma 4x4. I am kinda torn between an auto or manual trans for all the obvious reasons. One thing I have been impressed with is the apparant durability of the automatic transmission. For example, My GF has a 95.5 with the 3.4L and hers has 250K miles on it and still shifts perfectly.

were these the golden years for automatic transmissions? Is it reasonable to expect that kind of life time for all of them? I live in San Jose, CA so is the weather a factor?

Or should I just stick with a stick? lol..

Again, thanks for any detailed answers you can think of

I can't remember what year it was but I think there have been a few threads pop up about the 99+ (i think) having some overdrive failure. They were very few and far in between though. Just search for transmissions and see fi you find a common issue or year.
