DTC - P0340, Truck won't start all the time
Hi folks,
Here is the engine: The engine is a 1998 4Runner V6 3.4L engine, if you want more info you can read the swap thread here
Here is the problem: I have recently been noticing when starting that there is a time delay between when I turn the key to start the truck and when the starter actually engages. The delay is intermittent and varies. There is a click, a slight humming noise that sounds electrical, lights dims, etc. Today the time delay was permanent. I opened the hood checking for the problem, assuming it was a stuck solenoid. I tapped on the starter and tried again, nothing. Finally it started randomly. Except this time I got the check engine light with the only code being P0340 - "Camshaft position sensor A Circuit (Bank 1 or single sensor)"
Anyone have any ideas?
I am currently checking the wiring to the starter.

Wiring seems tight. I think I may have found the problem. I just started it a few times. I was underneath the dash, looking up into it and depressing the clutch switch and Cancel Switch manually. The truck would start sometimes even when those weren't depressed and sometimes would not start with them depressed. Is there a relay that connects the 2 switches that perhaps is getting stuck?

Did you ever figure out the answer to this? It sounds similar to a problem that I am having. My truck is automatic though. Either way, could you let me know (maybe via a PM) if you did find the solution.

Well, I pulled the green cover off the starter relay. Because when I was noticing problems I was watching it (head under the dash upside down) and it looked like it was discharging a spark inside the relay. I am not sure if that is normal. So when I opened up the relay I bent the switch a little closer to the coil and I have since not had a problem. Not sure if this was a red-herring or not.
