Driveline issues

Hi all.

I have an issue I was hoping that you could help me with.

1992 Std Cab 4x4 2.4L. 157k.

I am getting some serious driveline noise. The symptoms are as follows:

1- In every gear between 1500 and 2500 RPMs, I hear/feel a low sounding X.
2- In any gear and at any speed, if I stop accelerating i.e. no gas, I hear a clicking type sound. When I engage the clutch, it goes away.

The clutch is original and starting to slip. I have new one (just received last night). I took it to a shop to check out a sloppy shifter, the tranny jumping out of 4th and these noises. Shop quoted me 400.00 just to pull the tranny and check and stated another 500.00 to fix the pinion bearings (cause of the noises).

Well, I found the article on the shifter seat, bought a kit from Toyota and fixed the sloppy shifting/4th gear issue. That was 20.00 and very simple. But I am now going to install the clutch and am looking for suggestions on the other noises.

By the way, I visually and physically looked at the U joints. No slop. My first thoughts are bearings i.e. that is sound/feel that I think I am getting.

Thanks fellows.
