Does my gas tank sit low on purpose?
I apologize in advance for not having any pics, but it's night here, so I'll take some ASAP. Anyway, I've got the 18.9 gallon tank (I think it's that size, came with the 31*10.5*15 stock tires and wheels), and when I removed the sidesteps I noticed the tank hangs VERY low, about even w/ the rear axle. I'm kinda worried about this. I don't offroad a lot, but when i do I'm worried about nailing the thing on a rock. Is there any way to fix that besides a stronger skid plate?

This is the first thing I noticed when I took off my running boards. The gas tank and cross member hangs down LOW, or at least it looks that way. I have the 16.5 gal tank which is the larger size on the 2nd gen (yours should be the same). Mine measures 11 inches off the ground which is pretty good. This is one of the things they fixed on the 3rd gen. The gas tank and crossmember are up higher in the frame. Funny thing when I took off my running boards, people I knew thought I lifted the Runner because of the stuff hanging down.
So don't worry about it hanging low it just looks that way. Being in front of the axle helps also. Check out Jeep Cherokee's gas tanks. They are in the rear and do hang very low. The departure angle sucks on them, even though they're "trail rated".

Thanks guys, I was a little worried cause other people have noticed it as well. I'm sure when I replace the rear springs (I think they're compressed all the way) it'll be better. Blair, you have a pm, and the coolent was leaking from something just above the thermostat. I dumped in some stopleak and now it's all good. I've heard the stopleak is bad cause it can clog things, but I've used it for a long time and had no problems.
