do your tacoma's "pop" out of 4wd???

hey guys i have a 2002 tacoma 4x4. i have noticed that when i am in 4wd high and take it out by hitting the button, somtimes it like opps out of 4wd. like it seems like there is pressure on the 4wd and then it just lets go and pops out. like i have tried to go straight and turn the wheels each way a little bit then drive forward to relieve any pressure but it still sometimes does it. i mean it only does it maybe half the time, but when it does do it, it just seems like it might be bad and i want to see if anyone else knows why it does it or if it is normal? thanks guys.

Sounds like normal part-time 4WD driveline binding. What sort of road surface are you on when you "pop" out of 4WD? If you are on pavement (wet or dry), there is too much traction and that will cause the driveline to bind from the front and rear axles turning at different rates. Best to shift out of 4WD while still on a slippery surface and when driving straight ahead to have the binding released before shifting to 2WD.

Stay out of 4WD on dry pavement. My 03 Tacoma does the same thing, though, no matter what. It really worried me (the pop or clunk when I disengaged it) but the dealership tech. told me it's pretty normal. Some tension builds up no matter what, and the pop is the sound of that tension being released. Mine is less likely to do it if I stop completely, put it in neutral, release the clutch, and then disengage 4WD.

ok thanks guys, yeah by popping i mean like it kinda clunks or feels like a little bang, like all of a sudden the tension just released quickly and let go, yeah like if i need 4wd to get out of my driveway in the snow then take it out of 4wd once i get in the road, it usually does it. but i will try to keep it straighter for longer to relieve the tension. thanks guys.
