Tail Pipe?
Yet another Exaust question.
I'm getting a Magnaflow along with 2.25" piping installed this weekend. My question is: do I need to run a tail-pipe from the rear of the exaust? Could I just "dump" a small tip on the muffler? I'm looking for more sound, and I'm not too worried about fumes (7" lift). I was wondering how this would effect back-pressure and over-all power.
On a side note . . . how does a glasspack compare the the flowmaster/magnaflow in power and flow? Could I also go without a tail on that, or maybe route out the side just before the rear wheel?
Thanks!

I've seen lotsa guys with pick-ups just put a short "turn-down" right after the muffler. It should work great, and be out of the way when offroad (compared to a regular tailpipe out the back)

That's exactly what I'm thinking of loosehead. I had dual Flowmasters on my Nova that were "turned-down" and the sound was awesome. I'll eventually be gettinga custom rear bumper, and don't want to have to rebend the pipes also. Does anyone know the (dis)advantages of the tail-pipes besides the obvious (fumes)? Will I lose power if I leave them out altogther?

All I can think of is that too much "flow" can be a bad thing as well, a certain amount of backpressure is needed for good low end torque, which you'll lose without too much resistance. However, not having much pipe after the muffler is not likely to make much of a difference in the overall flow of the system.

I was thinkin about doin that as well...just cuttin the pipe back. Cause I'm cheap...so...just cuttin it back and puttin some "turn downs" on the resonator/cat would probably get some pretty good sound. Do you think that would be alright use with my stock Runner?
Thanks guys.

A few more thoughts...
Fink, if I were you, I would not run a turn down on my 4Runner , but if I had a pick-up instead, I would. Having owned various sizes of pickups in the past, I can say that turn downs on a truck aren't a big deal at all as far as fumes or extra in-cab resonance are concerned.
ayte - You have 3.0 in your truck, right? The factory exhaust on those is pretty small and restrictive. I seriously doubt that leaving off the tail pipe would cause a loss in power. The magnaflo and 2.25" pipe should only help...

when my shackles get put on, the shop will also be cutting off the exhaust behind the muff... leaving a small turn down. i want the sound, hopefully a little better power, it will be more out of the way, and it is pretty much free.
i have heard of lots of guys with trucks doing this, it will be fine.
where's the tail?

On a related note, is there a better place to put the tail pipe, other than between the body and the leafs? I would think it would get in the way at full flex like it is stock?
What about pickups with shells? Are the fumes from a downturn going to stink up anything like camping supplies or anything like that?

no idea. the easiest thing to do would probably be to drop down the hangers a bit and run it out under your leafs.
or maybe run it straight back and out through your bumper (put a hole in it) so its not hanging down.
