DIY CV-Boot Replacement Writeup

After a fairly extensive search, I finally came across a great writeup on replacing CV boots.

Anyone see any misleading advice with this?

Both my inners are ripped open, and I'm not paying anyone to replace them, I can't afford that.

funny, i did just that today. replaced both inner cv boots on the runner with some VW ones. did most of the work myself, but did have some help

it really wasn't as hard or techincal as i thought it might be. i had seen the work done before, but this was really my first time getting my hands dirty about it.
beyond that link, you might want to get a factory service manual/haynes manual. those are pretty detailed and helpful.

When I did mine (when I installed my new front diff) I was surpised at how easy it was. I replaced the inners with oem toyota's and the outers are MecaTech's. That write up you posted seems to cover everything I did. it's almost perfect.

Did you see my reply in the other CV thread? https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/cv-boot-write-up-34576/

The writeup you posted says to use a center punch to mark reference points on the axle and tripod joint. The FSM specifically says not to do this, use paint or something. I used my knife to scratch faint marks.

yeah i saw it. but so what are you marking?

1. where the inner part of the axel connects to the diff? (ie where the studs are?)
2. mark how the "roller bearings" or tripod thing fits into the the tulip fitting thing?
3. how the roller bearings fit on the actual axle?

Actually, I was talking to scofo, you replied while I was replying.

I just updated the other thread with a picture of the marks.

so do you only need to mark how the tripod joint fits on the axle? nothing else?

I didn't mark anything. you can tell when the boot is in place because there is a groove on the shaft for each small end of the boot.

That's all the manual says. The first time I rebuilt one I forgot to mark anything. It seemed to be fine.

1. mark the orientation of the axle as it connects to the diff, kind of like you do with the drive shaft when you pull it, you mark the orientation of the flanges so you can bolt the flanges back the way the cam off to help minimize vibration from being unbalanced.

2. this moves in and out when the ifs droops or is stuffed so marking that would be pointless.

3. I don't think this matters.
