Distributor trouble

I took my distributor out to put it in a new engine but it doesnt fit in the hole on the head. The gear on the distributor can make it through the hole if I wiggle it but as soon as it hits the fat round metal it wont fit. It fits fine in the old head (slides right through) but it wont budge for anything. What is wrong? What should I do?

Thanks,
Mario

Its not even close to the o-ring. The o-ring is in back, its getting stuck on the metal (right after the gear it's skiny round metal then a fat round metal that has a little downward slop to it, that is where it wont go in).

Thanks,
Mario

You could measure the hole in the head and the part on the distributor and see if they are the same. If they are I suppose a bit of filing on the distributor wouldn't hurt anything.
Are you sure it's not the alignment on the gear that's holding you up?
Try moving the rotor shaft a bit each way.
