has anybody tried converting there drum brakes to disc? if so how expensive and difficult is it to do? i have a 99 limited 4runner i wanna do it to

doesnt that system have a problem with the emergency brake or something?

You lose the stock emergency brake, unlike some of the older Toyota's (like my fj40) where the emergency brake is in the transfer case. I think you can get calipers with the emergency brake attached or go with line locks.

Be carefull with the line lock method for the e-brake....pretty sure DOT requires a mechanical e-brake to be considered 'road worthy' might cause problems if your state does a safety inspection.

Not sure if it is still done this way or not but the old GM disc brake rear end (80's Corvettes maybe?) had tiny drum brakes inside of the rotor that were used for the e-brake. Lots of parts and pain in that set up but it was pretty neat when it was all working.

For the FJ40 conversions, I know some use Caddy Eldorado calipers...they have park brake.

There is a truck rear disk setup on ebay right now (I do a frequent search for "toyota truck hub"...it will show up there)

you can get an ebrake system that goes on the back of the t-case from all pro too. disc conversion isn't something that's just a "change one thing and it's good" deal, there's more to it and expensive in my book, too expensive.

you get better gas mileage with drums anyways.

Better MPG??????? the only way a disc brake swap could harm your gas milage is if they were set up incorectly and the residual valve from the previous brakes was left on and they were constantly engaged.

What years of caddy calipers have the ebrake provision?

It certainly can be done and even I was curious about doing it, but have not had time to follow through yet.
.....I really hate the rear drums on these vehicles!

only thing i would like to accomplish with disc brakes is to have better stopping power. thanks for all the info but has anyone else done this conversion ???
