Hi everybody
I have 97' 4runner and try to put switch to disable abs on snow.the easiest way is to pull the fuse but who wants to pup the hood everytime.had this done once before but cant find the diagram.any help be greatly appreciated

Does your 4runner have the rear locker? If so then it's a pretty simple hack to spoof the ECU into thinking the diff lock is in place and deactivate ABS, otherwise it's a bit more work to get a switch installed.

Search here and on T4R.org, I know both methods have write-ups either here or there.

Search for grey wire mod and blue wire mod.

Why not just pull the fuse and be done with the ABS Brakes .

I just hate them and that is one of my first moves that and cruise control and DRL`s what a waste

Why in the world would you want to turn OFF the abs in the snow?

Snow, and gravel, is a surface where a locked wheel will perform better than a turning one. It allows a little pile of stuff to build up in front of the wheel, and for the wheel to dig down through the loose surface and into a little more solid stuff.

Personally, I think you're still far better off having ABS working on pavement, but that's just my opinion.

A locked up tire perform better than a tire that is rolling and steerable? Totally ludicrous! You my friend are in the minority with that statement. The whole reason ABS was created was to keep the tire in motion so as to have more control. Hi, welcome to reality! Here's a little education for you.

Not on loose surfaces, like gravel or snow.

And I agreed with you that on pavement and solid surfaces, ABS is a good thing.

First winter after getting our '98 runner, first snow on the ground I took it out, driving normally (very, very conservative 'grandpa style' driver), going about 10 mph on a side street coming up to a T intersection and I slid 15 feet out into the middle of it. Had zero braking power. ABS kicked in. It didn't really pulse, it just made a grinding sound and I had no brakes. The 'runner basically just coasted right into the street. How the heck that is safe I've never know - makes me want to smack the engineer


Soon after that, I just pulled the fuse - it is much, much more predictable in the snow now and I'll never go back!

The consensus I've heard is that for dry/wet pavement it has its place, but at least in these vehicles, it just sucks in the snow. I understand why they put these safety features in, but I grew up on unsafe vehicles so I'm used to it

Anyone know how the ABS in these models compares to the ABS in other makes? Is ABS = ABS anywhere, or does each maker approach it differently?
