differences in 22re motors
are there differences between the 22re motors that were intorduced in the 80's vs 90's? fo instance, i have a 93 22re. can i swap in a ecu from a older 22re.... or how about the harmonic balancer/ crank pulley?

i think the 22re was introduced in '84 when the motor still had the duel timing chain. i might have used the single timing chain block seen in '85 and after, but i'm not quite sure...maybe all re's had the same block
if that's the case, you could just find any old 22re block and swap it in

The 84-85 22r is carburated, 86+ 22rE are fuel injection, probably different ECU's , the long blocks are otherwise the same. There are some differences between the 90's 4wd and 2wd 22re's, I got a 95? 2wd 22re in my 89 4runner and needed a new starter as the old one simply would not fit. There was some disagreement as I could find no evidence that the starters were different.
The later ecu's should be the same, but I'd match the 4wd/2wd just to be sure.

excellent, th reason i ask is 1 i got a ecu upgrade, while my original ecu is being upgraded, i can still drive my truck by using another ecu. 2. i just replaced my seal for the crank pulley. the pulley has a groove in it so it leaks a little oil and i want to replace that

ECU Difference
An earlier post alluded that the ECUs may be different between a carb 22re and a FI 22re. My question is, why would a carburated engine have an ECU. The whole point of having an ECU is to control and vary the fuel delivery. I can't imagine a carburated engine needing an ECU. If I am off track here, someone let me know.

ECU
The difference there would be having the vacuum advance distributor on the carb version. Timing is never varied on the 22R or RE. You set it when you put the chain on and there's nothing that effects it after that.....that's where the ignition advance comes into play. The MAF is only on the FI version, it tells the ECU how much air is coming into the plenum.

To be fair, this thread is ancient in the internet world when YotaTech first became a forum. There was nowhere near the information online as there is now.
Also, this thread is in the wrong section.
