diesel questions

Ok, i have always thought that it would be totally cool to have a diesel Tacoma or older pickup (preferably the older pickup). The questions that I have are (a). Are there diesel engines out there that will fit an older pickup, say 1991-1994? (b) is there anybody that knows of this swap in the united states? and (C) if so, where can I buy a diesel engine and get info on swapping out the old V6 or 4cyl for the Diesel?.

One last question, and this doesnt relate to diesels: how good was the old toyota 3.0L V6? I have heard its crappy and that it was a solid engine, even rivaling the 3.4L in terms of solid-ness. Any comments?

Hey, I just came across this site the other day

He found a mercedes diesel on ebay, and is in the early stages of doing a swap. Seems like mercedes is one of the few makers that has been selling diesel engines here steadily over the years, other than the huge diesels that ford & dodge etc put in their trucks. I guess VW has always sold them too, but I'm not sure I'd want anything VW makes. This has been discussed a few times & I know there is are a lot of other sytems that would have to be swapped out too. Try searching diesel swap & see what you find about it.

The diesels for toyota trucks are made by Hino. If you have a Hino dealer in town try them cause the same engines were badged and used in Hino trucks.

you'll occasionally come across trucks in the US with the L, 2L or 2L-T(rare!) engines. they're a direct replacement for any "R" series motor, just need a different bellhousing

personally, i'd love to be able to stick a 5L 3.0 liter diesel in my pickup, but i'd have to get it imported, and i'd be screwed if i ever had to buy parts.

chrysler is making diesel an option in the jeep liberty next year, if it's successful i wouldn't be suprised at all if toyota followed up with their trucks and suvs. they have the the motors ready to go, they just don't sell them in the US currently

2004 EPA certified, 5L, Inline 4, Turbo'd & Intercooled,
175HP @ 2700rpm, 347ft/lbs @ 1600rpm, common rail fuel sys., and nothing as to how much it weighs.

Sounds like a nice little diesel. If these are truley what Toyota used, there's got to be parts available!

very good point brought up on the parts viewpoint.... it would definitely suck eggs. Buuuuuuuuttttt...... since I live near mexico, they will hopefully have some parts. I would never buy a car from there because only God knows what happened to it, but they probably have some parts somewhere. Good thing I have 3 years of spanish... lol.

that engine from hino looks like it is a pretty big engine. Could it fit in a 1991-1994 toyota pickup? it looks like it powers a huge truck, but for a 4cyl it has some amazing stuff. Does toyota use Hino overseas?

The majority of toyota diesels are manufactured for toyota by Hino which is a susidiary or co-ownership of Toyota Corp. They manufacture quite a few different engines, but they did or do have the same diesel as the 5L in some of the lighter trucks here in Canada. They of course go by different codes so you have to ask for the engine by other means to try to decipher which is the correct one.

Yeah, sure. That engine weighs as much as my truck does! That would be a sight...a 4runner going down the road with the front end dragging the ground!

lol that is pretty funny. mabe i will just get one from japan or something, because from what i am reading i can import it and then i dont have to smog it because it is diesel and diesels dont have to be smogged for some reason (cleaner?). Correct me if i am wrong fellow toyota lovers!

It probably is the same 5L I mean even if its really big, its still and inline 4, so I'm assuming it can't be that big. I mean the turbo and ic will add some bulk, but you can be creative with those. Wonder how much it is.

there about a million diesels on the road down here,The 3 ltr turbo is the best motor,they are quite low noise,& they go well, toyota should have plenty of info about them.
They should be a easy swap .

i don't think the 5L is all that big of a motor, it's a 3.0L 4 cylinder and it's used in the hilux overseas

Could the 3 Litre turbo fit in the 22re (whatever the name is) engine bay with a different bell housing?

Another question.... will fuel efficiency improve with a good engine but in a lighter truck?

If your interested in converting the metric ratings to english for comparison sake....

1.341 hp = 1Kw

0.738 ft/lbs = 1 Nm

the diesel is already efficient...the 3L and 5L are used in hiluxes which are basically a pickup in the US. should be more than enough power, you just might want to swap in a v6 third member in the rear for some peace of mind

Me Too on the Diesel

I have a 99 V6 Taco manual 4WD with 150 k approx on the engine

when the V6 does go, I would love to put a diesel in

I am going to check also on the diesel dealer in Tulsa

I rode in a Diesel Taco dbl cab down in Costa Rica and it was great

How about a 8 inch lift kit to stuff that cat under then slap a 10 speed and re-use the bus axel, drive and rear end. Can you say "Monster Garage". I can. Use the bus hangers and springs front and back and weld some braces across the frame ....
