just curious if anyone has converted to cummins 4bt in a 4runner or anything along those lines, or anything other than the 2l/t or 3l, (and yes i know about toyota diesel madness)

ive been keepin my eye on them for a while and theyre really not that expensive compared to the decent toyota diesels

They are to tall and to heavy for the front end of a toy, ESPECIALLY an IFS one. Not only that, but they are a very vibration happy motor, and like to rattle vehicles appart. Im sure it could be done, but the dissadvantages outweigh the advantages IMHO.

eventually i plan on puttin in a straight axle, and i was going to make a new frame just for that and a 4bt, so that i wont have to hack the ifs and change everything on that paper thin frame i have now, cuz my frame is already bent as it is

Yep, it'a 3.9L 4 banger and it's a monster of a motor... There's a guy who has one in an old CJ, and it's really pimp... I'd say diesel's are about the best motor's for every type of 4-wheeling, they're really easy to waterproof and they pukll forever... If you can figure out how to get the 4bt in, let me know cause I've been dreaming of doing this for awhile now...

I've been wondering the same thing for a while too. I think there was a cummins 4bt on ebay a while back. Not too bad priced either.

Any idea on dimensions and weight? I was actually talking to a guy in town about this friday.

Personally I'd rather have the diesel from the jeep liberty. Much newer technology, quiter, and smaller.

ill try and get some measurements on it, i glanced at i and i could tell that a body lift is def needed it has a huge ass oil pan, or perhaps modify the hood, cuz yeah it is pretty tall

They used the 4bt in some service trucks (think Frito Lay) I believe a Gruman chassis. They had a turbo 400 tranny behind them too. So you cound adapt the t400 to the Toyota transfer case to make the swap. Weight wise they are very similar to a small block v8, a little taller. I saw a cj7 with a 4bt with a twin turbo set up at Scheids this year. Looks very doable and an easy swap do to very few wires to make it run. The 4bt is known for their vibration though, not near as smooth as the 6bt that has been in the Dodge trucks since 89. They use a lot of the same parts injectors, VE pump and turbo, so getting crazy on the hp and torque would be fairly easy and cheap.
We have considered this swap but it is out of our price range right now.

i took measurements on my 2.7 measured approx 31 inch from top of intake man. to oil pan, found a link http://www.everytime.cummins.com/eve...erformance.jsp 4bt is 37.7 inch, so ur lookin at 8 inches difference roughly, as of now i have a 2 BDL and i have 4 inch to play with 5 at the max, all in all to do this the hood would have to be modified, oil pan maybe
edit: firewall might need modifying too

Toyota makes lots of high quality diesel engines that would probably be much easier to swap. Search and I bet you could find someone to import one.

the only problem I have with importing a diesel engine is that if anything breaks, I'll be out of comission for quite a while and have to import the replacement parts

i mean yea the 1 hdt's are good but they run like 7 grand the 2lt's and 3ls i feel are just underpowered, thats my opinion though, if had d4-ds here id jump on that in a heartbeat
