DID you Know...oil Cooler

Did you know that we have an oil cooler on the 5vz-fE? I am getting a motor rebuilt and when i took it out (motor) there was this cannister like thing on the side of the block with water hoses. figured it was there for whatever reason.

Then, i was looking at the engine componest section of a FSM and it called it an oil cooler. I suppose water runs through there much like an auto tranny set up.

I think all of our motors have them...I know my 3vze has one.

tacoma and 4 runner with 5vz had all oil cooler, but some V6 tundra didn't

^ But that's a different V6 in the Tundra right? It probably didn't need one.

It just suprised me to know we need an oil cooler and that is how they went about it. never wudathunkit

i am actually thinking i might take it off and just add a remote oil filter with an inline cooler? Because getting to the filter with a full skid is not fun--face it changing the oil even with a regular skid isnt that fun...

+1 Every damn time I drop the filter into the skid and spend 5+ minutes trying to find the exact spot where I can fish it out. Then have to make sure and throughly clean out and oil with brake cleaner. I was thinking of a remote oil filter kit but that just seems like so many more opportunities for a leak.

I have tried to do the oil filter relocation things before with a kit i thought would work----never again--just when i got home the hose blew off and almost ate the motor.

Now if there was a really good one with AN fittings and "last for ever bad arse hose" then I would get it and install it while my motor is being built.

ur doing it wrong.

the first step is remove skidplates.
air gun+socket=both plates dropped in 56 seconds

I haven't removed the skids to change the oil, and it's a pain because oil drips down in 15 different locations after you're done! Next time I will remove the skid plates. I really wish the oil filter was in a easier location also. I wonder if Toyota techs remove the skid plates? (considering how fast they try to get stuff done)

I used to always remove the skids but if I can catch the filter I don't have to remove the skid.

Another thing to keep in mind if you change your own oil...It's not a bad idea to pull the skid anyway, even if its a pain because it gives you a better look at whats going on with you engine... check for leaks and whatnot My .02

5 bolts, 3 in the front and 2 in the rear...she comes down in one piece. It takes 20 mins if that to change oil, filter and reinstall skid.

I just turn the front wheels to the left and then you can unsnap the wheel well liner and push it aside. It makes it a lot easier to get up to the filter than trying to snake your arm up around .

You know i have been told that and i guess i just get used to doing something one way. Maybe i will give that a try next time and SANs the relocation effort

I'm definitely gonna remove it next time.

Edit: AND I will start using Wix oil filters, or buy a couple Toyota ones.

I've had my remote filter set-up for over 4 years now and no problems whatsoever. It sure works great for oil changes but in the back of my mind, I have never felt completely comfortable with it knowing a hose can go at any time. I'm seriously considering going back to the OEM set-up, and now that I've installed a body lift since then, getting at the filter from the wheel well instead of underneath. There is a lot to be said about "peace of mind".
