I am planning on doing my deckplate mod sometime this weekend...wish me luck! I have access to a hole saw but it is a 4.5" and I see that most people use a 4.25". Has anyone used a 4.5" with success?

let us know how it comes out, im thinking about doing that myself, but my question is,,, what would be the differance of leaving the air box lid open ? is it the position of the plate ? anyone ...

Good question...hmmmmmm. I will let you know how it turns out.

Air has a more direct route through the front of the airbox rather than making the 90 degree bend from the top. I think the lid also helps to seal the air cleaner from debris getting around it. Not sure any performance difference would be measurable though.

The difference is the seal. More dirt gets in with the lid open. Trust me.

Part of the function of the lid is to hold the filter in place.

If you cut the deckplate hole too big, the deckplate will not work. If you cut it too big for the 4", you can always go to 6" like me.

i believe the 4.5 inch hole saw is better..i got a 4.25 and the deckplate did not fit, i had to trim it with a sander to get the deckplate in..so 4.5 should be almost perfect

I just traced around the deckplate lid and cut it out with a scroll saw. Worked great.

I've read about this deckplate mod folks have been doing and I am wondering just exactly what the huge benefit is? Does it really make that much difference in hp? Besides, you can't use it when offroading right, just on the pavement?

yea, but you dont need it in offroading..it's not like your gonna be diong 75+ in any trails or anything...it's more for the upper rpms...

I was skeptical too, but I am telling you......try it an tell me what you think.....you will certainly feel the difference!!!!! Motor seems to have new life.....and maybe even some decent passing power.

As for off road that is the beauty of the deckplate....just screw in the plate and you re watertight for offroading again.

Someone should recieve an award for coming up with that mod!!!

I've read about the Deckplate Mod on Jason Bs page, is it outlined in detail anywhere else? I'd like to read about it some more before I go sawing holes in my rig...it's the skeptical engineer in me. But I also admit when I'm wrong, and that happens a lot, just ask my wife!

What do you do in the field of Mechanical Engineering? I design pressure vessels, heat exchangers and autoclaves to ASME, TEMA and AWWA code and whatever else they need done too. I work for an industrial contractor/fabricator.

I am serious!
My rig was having trouble with passing.....then I did the mod right before we went on a long trip. I was shocked at the increase in power and my wife was just as amazed. She asked me what I did to the truck to make it drive like that. I told her and she just said "I don't have a clue what you are talking about but leave it like that"......

That enuf proof.....even passes he wife test......now that's a good mod in my book.

I designed rockets (yeah I know... a rocket scientist) out of college then got bored so I designed Palm Pilots and got bored of that too so now I am doing my MBA so I can venture (pun intended) into something new.

The deckplate works! I was very excited about it when I finished it, but now that the novelty has worn off I still am really happy I did it. I was nervous about cutting stuff up, too. I was searching all over for replacement airboxes incase I screwed up and stuff. But I never did and I am totally satisfied. Like people have said, it really opens up the higher rpms. That is great for passing or just getting into that higher power that's in the higher rpms. I think it quieted down my freeway driving, too, because the engine is breathing so well.

PS - I'm an engineer, too.
