deck plate mod vs. elbow removal
Hey:
I was about to do the deckplate mod and then saw that HBoss removed his airbox elbow. Which would be the better mod? Thanks again for all the help, since joining this forum I've installed speakers and a deck in my 994runner and things are running great.
thanks for the help

I believe the deck plate mod is better. How much better I don't know. But I would assume w/more air being sucked in, and being sucked in faster because it's straight in versus coming from the side, it would be better.
I was just too lazy to do it & look for the sensor safe silicon.

Thanks for the help. Your mod pages have been so dang helpful. I was able to take my door off no problem, install the speakers, and I'm about to do the deck mod as per your wise tutelage (big words from a college man i reckon, i just graduated).
Thanks again Hboss for the great write ups and pics.

amp install
You two guys seem to be the most knowledgable about 4runner mods, and i have one more question for jason and hboss. I like my speakers, but I need to install the sub for some better sound. I have a JBL 400 watt subamp and am thinking about where to install it but really don't know how. Jason, you suggested that I install it in place of the tire jack or in that compartment on the right side of the trunk.
I've always gotten my stuff installed by the fellas at a stereo shop, but I want to get to know my car better and do it myself, do you guys know of any write ups that would hold my hand in installing an amp? Thanks again
i just graduated college am recovering from last night where I've have had a beer for every grade i got that wasn't an A, needless to say, PBR is my new best (and worst) friend.

"Remember from the previous chart you will get basically the same results by removing the elbow as cutting open the box."
...which is also why I have not scheduled "cutting into my airbox" on any of my upcoming mods-to-do. Just my opinion, but I don't feel the extra few ponies are worth the effort over the elbow removal.

Grimace:
Seeing that everyone has written a deckplate removal, I wrote a how-to on the air elbow removal at:
http://4runners.org/articles/airbox/
As for which one to do, it depends on what you will be using your 4runner for. If you plan to off-road, the deckplate is better. If you are a street runner and have no intention to drive in deep water (or be caught in it), the elbow is perfectly fine and much easier to do.
