Hey all,

I just got the wonderful news that my 4R needs both cats and a tps. The estimate came in at nearly $3g. The cat cost is about $1000 a pop. Anyone else know of some aftermarket cat that bolts in etc... I picked up the TPS from the stealer and will install it soon enough.. My inspection isnt up until august.

Does anyone have the resistance readings for the TPS so i can properly tune it?

I would go with a quality aftermarket cat (with a warranty) and have a reputable muffler shop weld it up for you. The dealer will charge crazy money for cats - as you see.

As far as what brand to go with, up to you. I'm running MagnaFlow cats on my BMW. Three months after install they started throwing CELs. This could be because the Bimmer is a sensor whore and tolerances are very very small. I'm guessing the Toyota might be more forgiving. For what it's worth, my mechanic wants to install a brand called Catco, I believe on the BMW. Regardless, get a warranty. I can't see the whole thing costing you more than $150-$200.

What state and what kind of testing do they do? What codes are you getting?

Yea i was throwing a CEL code about 6 months ago and after a lot of research on here and finding out it could be a multitude of problems i went the the magnaflow highflow cat and also a URD simulator to make sure the code wouldnt come back. went from 2 cats down to one

I'm in NY. I'll throw the OBD-II scanner on it, and check what it said. I'm pretty sure it said "low catalyst efficiency" or something along those lines. It may have said TPS too (I did notice a little hesitation when accelerating and I recently cleaned my MAF.)

Which Bilstein shocks should I get. I was looking at the F4-BE5-2451-H0 96-02 HD shocks.. Anyone have some input on that?

Many people i know run magnaflow high flow cats. with no problems. Myself included.

Not sure about the setups with dual cats though

You do not need to tune the TPS for the 3.4L.
(I am assuming the 3.4L.)

While not green I use a URD O2 simulator so my truck thinks the cats are ok. I will keep the simulator in the event I change cats so that I don't get a code.

You are wrong. as of this month there are no ODBII AFTERMARKET cats that are legal for sale in Ca. At this point the only option is OEM.

Where can I get the URD simulator? I plan on putting in a walker factory fit cat piece, but I hate o2's I'm not trying to F* the enviroment, I just think the o2's are the most unreliable sensor on a car, and in NY, they are starting to nip at CA's heels with the rediculous laws..

You'll need to have a o2 sensor hooked up down stream and tied into the ECU, the simulator ties into the ecu and fakes a OK signal from the down stream o2 sensor. Range between $60-$90. I had the option of replacing my o2's and the cat or the $60 simulator. the o2's were $200 ea. and the cat from toyota $900, so you can see why I chose the $60 option. I still trip a code on occasion but they don't stick.

I know, this is a bit off subject, but since we're on the subject of cats, maybe someone can help me with one of mine.

About a week ago, I noticed a rattling metal noise coming from underneath the vehicle while I was driving. The noise got louder as rpms increased, but was not present under normal idle. Long and short of it, I traced the noise to the 1st cat. With the vehicle off, I can hit it w/ a hammer and hear the exact same sound. It sounds like there is some loose metal material in there banging around.

No codes are being thrown, but this noise is driving me nuts. I hear it all the time...even with the windows up and the radio on while driving. Vehicle runs great, but that noise...

So my question is, is the only fix a new cat or can I simply disassemble the faulty one and remove the loose material and be ok?
