Daily Driven Tacoma

A little foresight on my current situation:
I'm 21. I'm probably too ambitious for my own good. I bought my Tacoma originally as a daily driver to get me to and from school, and to and from the mountains in upper New York/out west once or twice a year. My dilemma lies herein: My current setup of 2.5" lift consisiting of an AAL and coil spacer was just what I needed. Unfortunately I've caught the offroad bug, and am adding a rear locker, finishing up my sliders, and am fab'n a rear bumper. I will have 32x10.5 tires after winter and am worried about my automatic tranny holding up to the extra weight of sliders/bumpers/and tires. Do you vetern wheelers think these additions to my ONLY vehicle un-economical and stupid?
I honestly only offroad on loggin trails maybe once a month...I plan on joining the ohio offroad club also. Do people join things like this with their only vehicle. Should I take my interest and rather than put it into my TACOMA, save money and buy an older yota? Thanks for letting me let off some steem!I graduated today and am asking myself too many questions now that I can actually spend some time on my truck!

everything planned above is fine... the tranny wont have a problem with it... you eventually may want to regear, but it isnt a necessity.... my truck is a 4x2, and was equipped with the equivalent of a 25" tire on it.... i know have a lift and 31" tires on it... everything has help up well, even with the way i drive!

You'll be just fine, you'll notice a loss in power though with the 32's. But if you can deal with it being a little slower, then more power to you...

You will want to keep your AT fluid changed regularly and may want to think about adding another in line cooler, but you will be fine. You still may want to look into an older Yota to run as your off road rig, that way if you do break something or dent it up or get the interior muddy it wont effect your commuting needs! I would look for an early 80s 4x4 pickup myself to build up as my off road only rig, but thats just me! Have a good one...

Sounds like what I did right out of college. Got a pick up but it was a Ranger. Fire storms hit Florida and there were tons of trails. Caught the bug and started moding. Long story short and 6 years later I had 7inches of lift, 33's, locker, custom bumpers, huge lights, headders, ignition....the works. Tranny started to go and I was forced with the delema to put 3 grand into the rig or use that + savings on a new ride? Toyota here I came! I still love going into the woods but learned that my wheeling was mostly swamps, lots of water or sand. Just the nature of where I live and some costly wheeling at that. I just was not getting out as much as I did in the past. So here I am building this stout rig and only getting out once a month at the most.

Now when I want to get away I jump on the KTM to feed the jones. I just can't take the wife and all the gear on the bike. I did jack up the new runner some but don't plan on going mental like I did with the "Hummranger". Those running boards are calling out to be replaced with All-Pros like I had on the old rig. I only got 4 grand for my old truck and know I put at that much in to in with all the hop ups. I think all that stuff I put on hurt the resale and I don't want to make that same mistake again. When I get time and more space for toys I will get a dedicated wheeling rig. So you may want to go that direction from the start. Just my $.02.

And the KTM is a LC4 640 (625cc's)- a huge street leagal dirt bike.

How was your tacoma bought. If a reg cab 4cyl with 31s and a tow package from the factory you should have 4.56s stock. I've wheeled that setup with alot more weight than you listed and I've only noticed once in that truck that it would actually need a crawlbox. That's running 33x12.50's. After 130,000 of road hard put back wet with say 110,000 of those miles in the woods, the tranny just started to show signs of needing work

dd taco

My Tacoma is a reg. cab 2.7 w/4.10 gears and 31x10.5" tires being driven by an automatic. On the way home from graduation today I just turned 120,000 miles on her. I believe I'm going to stick w/ my plan of sliders(already welded up, just need to weld onto truck, bumpers, add a tranny cooler next week, and stick w/ 31" tires rather than 32's. I wish someone had a 32x10.5 inch tire!
hey Coleman, I raced GNCC for two years on a heavily mod'd 300ex.When my sponsor backed out I had to quit because of fund issues and college. I then casually raced mx but realized I just couldn't hang w/ the 4 strokes. Honestly my tacoma is a new outlet for me that I wanted to explore. I wanted to get away from dirtbikes/race quads...I had been racing/riding those 4 days a week since I could walk. Excuse my babbling....I really love yotatech. So much inspiration!

BFGoodrich makes a 33x10.50. I ran your same setup with 33x12.50s and wasnt hampered that much on power of course where I live isn't hilly. You start getting into the mountains you'll want more. I DD mine for 2.5 years with 33's and 4.10s. The type of tire you buy along with the type of rim ( this meaning is tire true to size how much tire/wheel weight the combo has) will affect this

Rockcoma, did you have the automatic or standard?
You must have sawzawed your fenders to fit 33's! I only have 2.5" of lift!

No sawzall in my fender. Like I said rim and tire combo my friend. Taco's prefer 4 to4.5"bs to make the front ends live better. Before I knew that I had 3.75's but had to use 1/4" wheel spacers to make the rims fit so there was my 4"bs front end. I ran 33x12.50 tsl swamper with 15x8 rims and being the radial swampers are smaller than the bias ply they measured 32.?tall and 9" wide. I've seen the same rims with BFG muds and no rub unless flexed with OME883's and N91s struts which is what I ran.
