Yeah thats a problem! You can replace the boot but to replace the whole axle itself is much easier and more worth while in the end.
If you have an Advanced Auto Parts, they have new CV axles for $80 with a lifetime warranty and no core charge. You can't go wrong there, I just recently picked some up myself, and am now just faced with the challenge of putting them on. From what I've read its not too terribly hard, so I may give it a try tomorrow, I'll let you know.

uh sir, that beast looks torn,
may as well replace the whole thing if it pulled apart enough to tear... did it drive ok after that? if so it seems that would mean the core part of the cv was still intact, but either way the boot at minimum would need replacement, and may as well replace new axle
make sure you have done a diff drop (search if you dont know)... and if you don't know, you don't have it, and you should
also, new sway bar end links? stock or discos? they look shiny in the pic

You can either replace the boot or replace the axle. Boot is cheaper, Axle is easier. I'm not going to recommend one way or the other because each has its advantages: see the 2nd gen thread that's going for opinions on either side.
But, on the 3rd Gen you can not run with the axle removed. You will leak front diff fluid as soon as you pull the inner shaft from the diff. Not really sure you can do that with any vehicle - I wouldn't.
Whatever you decide, its better to fix it sooner than later.

or you can bust the rest of the axle apart, stick the chunk back into the front diff to keep it from leaking (both sides) and be happy in 2wd...
note: disregard above if you are either in your right mind, or unless you are stuck in the desert/woods somewhere

I've heard that they aren't that bad on the wallet "aftermarket". It doesn't look to difficult to change out either. I've heard you'll need a loan to get it done at the dealer though. http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/maintenance/cv_axle/

It's probably been said already but since im in such a good mood:
It's much easier and more effective to replace the whole CV axle.
Remanufactured CV axles can be had from Napa for around 100 bucks after you bring them back your core axle (or if you do that first, whatever.) They have lifetime warranties too I BELIEVE. Thats what the guy told me, but he seemed unsure at first. I live in SoCal where things are f*ing outrageously expensive, so I have heard of people getting them for less in the boonies (non CA).
Here is a write-up that is pretty good:
