I suspect this is due to a loose connection, because I strongly suspect that it quit working after I went over a very rough section of interstate.

The dash light goes on and stays on when the button is pressed to enable it, but that's it.

I've read a couple comments about it possibly being related to a burned out tail light, but I'm good there. I've also checked the fuse-which I believe is the same one as for 4wd (the CC dash light does not come on if the 4wd fuse is removed).

Next places to look? How many connections?

another thing would be the buttons under the dash that the brake or clutch pedal depress when braking or clutching...these functions override the cruise. I would make sure they are not stuck down...It's always best to start out with the easy fixes....worth checking at least

obviously if you have an automatic there would only be one button type switch for the brake pedal....

Yeah, it's an auto. I was checking my brakes lights today and they aren't on without any pressure on the pedal, so I would think that rules out the brake.

There may be a dead man switch up near the top of the brake pedal that is depressed when the brakes aren't being applied, that is, when the pedal is all the way up. When you tap the brakes it lets off on the brake switch and breaks the cruise control circuit, causing it to deactivate. I know that's how they do the clutch pedal, so there is probably one on the brakes as well. Worth checking.

It could be your clock spring behind your steering wheel. Normally it's fine but if someone has ever worked on your steering it might have gotten kinked and then over time the wires break. When mine went the horn was out also.

the fact that the cruise control light in fact, lights up,
eliminates the spiral cable (non-technical term clock spring) being the problem

there is one wire that activates and operates cruise control, so if it
lights, that wire is working.

[cruise control on/off + and - are all the same wire with momentary
contact at varied resistance values, dictated by button presses]

Check underhood and make sure the CC cable hasn't popped off the throttle body or something like that. Must have been a real rough section of interstate!
