Hey so I have a 97 Tacoma and my cruise control doesnt work. It work about half the time for a while but now nothing. Does anybody know where a good place to start diagnosis would be? It kindof looks like the cuise may have been added by the toyota dealership after it came out of the factory if that helps.... thanks

is it a manual? If so, then its really simple... your clutch pedal is not coming up to its normal position. This is as simple as replacing the crazy clutch spring with a linear one. Its literally a $1.00 15 minute job.

Mine occasionally doesn't work either, it just didn't bother me enough to research it. What's crazy about the stock clutch spring?

same thing happened to me if you have the 5 speed. if you take the front top of your foot and place it behind the clutch pedal and move the pedal towards you while you drive, it should activate the CC if you engage it. I replaced the spring and that fixed the problem. good luck!!

The stock clutch pedal return spring is a wound spring (almost like one you would see in those Grip strengthing squeeze handle things). This spring is constrained by a cheap plastic contraption that wears with age and impedes the ability of the spring to fully return to its uncompressed state. I picked up a normal linear spring from True Value. If you get down and look at the clutch pedal, you will see about how long it needs to be. I attached one end to an eyelet under the dash, and the other to an eyelet on the pedal (its almost as if they were designed for this). You can search to see writeups of how to do it, but it really is simple, and I have never had the Cruise Control issue again.

Cruise control is affected by a number of electrical issues also. It could be as simple as a bulb is out or incorrect part application.

Check all your electrics, you got good turn signals and brake lights? Towing connector on the back end?

So I figured it out! The cruise control on my truck was installed after the dealership got the truck. They used several of those quick connect splicer things with the little blades in them. Anyways as I was trying to trace the wires under the dash I happen to see that one of the quick connectors had a wire that had worked it's way loose. I think that it was spliced into the wire that goes to the brake lights or something. So it works now after like two years... But it is still a little jerky sometimes. Does anybody else's cruise kindof jerk a little and doesn't stay at the exact speed you set it at but within 5mph of it?
