crankshaft pulley???

Is the crankshaft pulley, commonly called the harmonic balancer or the vibration dampener, supposed to be two pieces or one. the is the main pulley that drives the alternator, fan , and water pump. My 1991 4runner's power steering drive pulley(on the same shaft but bolted onto the harmonic balancer with 4 bolts ) sheared off because the harmonic balancer somehow was rubbing against it, causing the metal of the pulley to become very thin and weak, making it to FLY off my 4runner while going down the road. After I took the center of the PS drive pulley off , I found that the center of the harmonic balancer was free of the outer ring which "grabs" the belts to turn them. I was needing to know if the harmonic balancer should be two pieces , an outer ring with the center locked to the crankshaft, or one piece meaning that i need a new one.

Post pulley

you have a 22re rite? if you do the balancer is supposed to have a rubber piece connecting the two parts. it's only that way on the 85 and newer engines. i've seen them spin on the rubber and it throws your timing marks off. the timing mark and the key way at the crank should line up. you will definitly need a new one there is no fixing it. the outer part the belts grab onto is supposed to come of with the piece you left on the crank. i have agood used one i'll sell you for $15 + shipping.

it a V6 (3vez?), i did notice that the ring felt like rubber on the insided, but the ring spun freely,( lots of space in between the ring and the center)

i never had a 3.0 apart but they the way you make it sound they are setup the same. when you take it off normally you would take the bid nut off of the front of the crank and both pieces should slide off together. they are held toggether with the rubber inside that deteriorated on yours and feel apart. a 22r or 22re has the 4 small bolts that hold the extra power steering pulley on. if you had manual steering that extra pulley would not be there. the older style pre 84 22r's did not have the rubber like your 3.0 and 85 and up 22re's

All toyota engines are internally balanced so that harmonic balancer is in fact just an inertia ring to prevent damage to the ascessories when they are under load. The ring should obviously not spin at all since its primary function is to drive the ascessories and thus should be replaced (this part cannot be fixed). :pat:
