a couple questions about fj80 coil users...

hey guys,

ok so, i think i can get some fj80 rear coils for the rear of my 2nd gen. my plan was to use those, get some bj spacers from 4crawler, and new shocks all around. from what i have read around here, i am afraid that the coils will give me too much lift in the back. i am on a fairly tight budget, so i dont want to do a 4" IFS lift. this might be a dumb question, but is it possible to cut coils? will this compromise the strength or the function of these coils? i was thinking of putting them in and if it was too high, cutting some off. if that wont work, i might just go with some downey HD coils and stay stock on the front.

the reason i dont want to go with so much lift is because of my budget - i dont really want to deal with the panhard drop bracket. the drop bracket isnt a problem if i go with the downeys - am i correct on this? if anybody has any input on this, i would extremely appreciate it. thanks to all for the great info here.

I think they should work. The butt might be a little high, but I'm not sure. If nothing else, you could get the BJ spacers, Downey/OME coils, and then add coil spacers in the rear as needed.

And cutting coils is almost always a bad idea.

dont cut the coils... i have 2 short side LC coils and i dont think they provide enough lift. i didnt do the pandhard drop because of budget issues as well and havent had a problem yet. and yes, you do not need to do the pan hard drop if you just get the Downey HDs i ran HDs for a year before i switch to LCs

Yeah, I'm with Randomness on the coil cutting idea.
I went with cruiser coils in the rear and bj spacers up front.
I only have 32s and would prefer 33s but still dont think its too much lift. Heres the breakdown of my lift.

Cruiser coils: $55
BJ Spacer: $89 (I think...got in on the group buy last year)
Skyjacker Nitros: $139.80 (NTWonline.com ...shock special)
Extended Brakeline: $29 + shipping (Marlincrawler.com)
Panhard drop free (had on fabbed up)

Total: A little under $350 with shipping included

I you look around especially on the shocks and coils you can do this lift pretty cheap. As far as the panhard, instead of dropping the bar on the passenger side I raised it on the drivers side. Depending on who you talk to, this might not be the right way to do this, its hard for me to say. Its got the axle close to centered and besides a little driveline scrape that I fixed, its worked find for me. If you're interested in the design, let me know.

The bottom of this post has some pics, before and after.

s wall98,

those pic at the bottom of that post is exactly what i am looking for. just a few questions/concerns:

1. the coils i can get are the rears off a 97 fj80. i see that one is longer than the other, but the general consensus seems to be that the extra 1/2" wont matter...the truck will still set level. have you heard or seen anything contradictory? i can get the coils for $50 shipped.

2. ive heard that you can get an extended brake line at napa for like $11 or something like that. would this be ok? how much longer did you go on the brake line?

3. have you heard of any group buys on the bj spacers? just wondering

i am definitely interested in the design. your set up is what i am going for.
thanks a lot

Dewey,
1. My coils were also different lengths, I believe it was about 3/8". I have noticed that it doesn't sit totally level. That being said, I dont think that you'd even notice it if you weren't looking for it.

2. I heard the same thing about going to an autoparts store. I decided to go with marlin crawler because I've talked to people on here that did it and its braided stainless. Its also pretty cheap. Somebody else might chime in on the NAPA brakeline.

3. Haven't seen anything on group buys lately. I got mine when they first came out about 2 years ago. Check the classifieds and maybe even check with Elripster. I believe he designed them, should have a website in his profile.

4. I'll try to get some pics tomorrow of my panhard setup. Don't know that I could fab one up but I might be able to get you in touch with the guy that did mine.

I just got your pm by the way. Like I said, I'll try to get you some pics tomorrow, of the panhard and some showing you both sides to see how level she sits.
Like I said, I'm very pleased with it. Like you, I was alittle worried that it would be too much lift but couldnt be happier....well unless I got some 33s.

go with Stainless Steel brake lines, i got mine at Central 4 wheel drive, they were like 40 bucks. talk to Strap22 about BJ spacers and shocks. i got OME shocks and BJ spacers for like 400, but that included a $50 next day air shipping.

Quick questions Tofer: It appears that the LC coils raised your rear more than the Downey HD's. Is this correct? How much lift did you get from the LC coils? I think you have a 2nd gen. Will these coils work on a 3rd gen?

when i did the downeys, i got about 1.5-2 inches of lift over sag. when i went from HDs to LC coils, i gained another ~2 inches, so it would be ~3.5 inches over stock sag. i am not sure about them working on a 3rd gen.

i dont have any other pics of post lift, i;ll try to get some tomorrow

Has anyone else had success with the LC rear coils on a 3rd gen?
