Coolant temperature sensor
I ran an advanced diagnositc on my '98 3.4 today. It showed that the engine temp (ECT) was 221 degrees. The gauge on the dash is normal. The temp taken by infrared at the water neck was 175. Are there tow seperate sending units on this engine like there is on the 22RE? If so, I hope the one for the ECM is just behind the timing cover on top of the engine near the fuel rail. Am I right? Thanks guys.

You are right. There are two. The water temp sender is at the back of the top side of the engine. It feeds the temp gauge on the cluster. The engine coolant temperature sensor that supplies the signal to the ECU is located at the front of the engine near the fuel rail on the passenger side.
