Cold Air Intake (MAFci System) development, anyone interested(V8 and V6?

Hello everyone
We are currently looking into developing a MAFci System for the V8 or V6 4th gen 4Runners. MAFci Systems are the first intelligent intake sytem designed specifically for mass air sensor equipped cars and trucks. The Toyota mass air sensor makes the 4Runner a perfect canidate for the MAFci System.

Every MAFci system includes a high flow aFe reusable filter and all the associated plumbing (Usually 3.5" OD pipe), a bigger mass air sensor housing, associated hardware, and a MAF customizer. THe MAF customizer is what allows the use of a bigger mass air housing and is also used to tune the car for gains not possible with other intakes. Typical gains on a V6 are around 15-25 wheel hp and 17-30 wheel hp on a V8.

This post is to see if there is interest from you 4Runner guys. If we could get a list of about 15 people who would be interested if the above stated gains were relized that would be enough to get the ball rolling. We do not expect money or anything we just want a list to determine if there is interest out there. If there is interest then we will develop and test a prototype to determine if the gains are there. If they are we would like to sell it if not the project will be scrapped.

We are also looking for a truck in the washington dc, baltimore area to do the development on. In return that person will recieve a free intake for use of his/her truck. We would like to start with the 2003-2004 V8, but if there is more interest in the V6 we will start there.

We would also like your input. What types of things would you like to see included in the design of this intake.

Please visit www.mazda6tech.com to see voiced opinions of our products.

Thanks,
Josh Adams

I'm always looking for more power. I haven't heard anything good about the other air intake replacements in terms of gained power. Some say the sound is better. Personally, I will not pay for that. If you can actually make the HP gains you say you can, I would be interested.

BTW, I don't know enough about intakes to suggest anything regarding design. I would just say that I think you should focus entirely on more power gains. There are so many trash-talking power modifications on the market, it's depressing. Since it appears that Toyota may never come out with the Supercharger, any extra power you can squeeze out of the stock engine would be appreciated and I'm sure people would fork over $ for it.

BTW, I know the same V8 is used on the Land Cruiser, Sequoia, and Tundra and probably on their cousins in the Lexus line (LX470, GX470). I believe the V6 is used on a number of different Toyota vehicles too. I assume that your new intake would work on those as well. There are various specialty forums around for those vehicles.

This should be a popular addition if it makes the power gains.

That is why we have established power minimums in order to deem prototypes worth manufacturing. We are very excited about the 4RUnner's potential just need to establish interest.

I'd be in... but cost will be an issue.

The $300ish that Airaid gets for their intakes is crap. They get it 'cause their marketing has allowed them to sell into a vertical market consumer base where you can hide the material cost from the consumer. The engineering cost of that system has been recouped a LONG time ago.

Important bullets for me would be:
  • Bring it in well under $200
  • Make it flexible enough to fit in the various under-hood scenarios of the 2nd, 3rd & 4th gen Runners (3.0->3.4 engines)
  • ...and the Tacoma folks too
  • Remember that we like using our original airboxes so we can keep water out (ref: "the deckplate mod")

Hit those and I think you'll have a product that you can sell a boatload of.

Remember a lot of these engines are used across multiple vehicles. Is there a reason you're concentrating on the 4Runner only? Wouldn't you want to sell to the Sequoia and Tundra and Land Cruiser, and Lexus owners as well?
