coil over 2nd gens
Would it be possible to swap 2nd gen IFS with a set of coil overs and just remove the torsion bars altogether? I don't see why this wouldn't be possible. Maybe a different shock tower would be needed but why else wouldn't this work? As for CV angles, it wouldn't be any different than a 3rd gen would it?

My main reasons for wanting to see if this will work are more suspension travel and an easier smaller lift, and if I'm not mistaken, not as harsh as cranking up the torsion bars.
I'm not completely familiar with how the coil over setup looks on a 3rd gen. The bottom part mounts to the lower control arm and the top mounts to the shock mount attached to the frame? The only thing I can notice that's different is the way the top of the shock mounts. For the stock 2nd gens, it's a bolt that passes through the mount and is secured with a nut. On the 3rd gens it's a loop that a bolt is passed through. Correct me if I'm wrong on that one. I wonder if there is a coilover shock out there that has the bolt that would fit with the stock shock tower?

There is a pic from a supposed Downey up coming release that does just that.
Sure it is possible, not truly practical.
Try air shocks and loosen the t-bars to maintain lift while actually using complete travel.

If you loosen the torsion bars, won't you be loosing lift?
As far as I can tell, all that's needed is a different upper shock mount and some new coil-overs.
I just wonder how much longer (if any) the shocks for the 3rd gens are than the ones for the 2nd gens.
I also wonder if it would put more stress on the LCA, since the torsion bars are attached to the UCA.

Air shocks add to weight carrying capacity of the front end. Loosen the bars until you start to lose lift. Then tighten them until you are at the original height. Now you can use the whole travel since it is no longer a closed system.
$70 versus $1000 for even coming close to the other option.
Not sure there is enough space between the upper and lower A-arms to squeeze in even a 2" diameter coilover.
Removing the t-bars would put more stress on the newly fabbed shock mount.
