I am having a problem when my 4Runner is cold (which is quite often up here in Minnesota). Whenever I hit a large bump or a small bump while cornering, I hear a clunk sound from the rear interior. Has anyone else experienced this?

I thought it was something in the rear hatch itself, but there was nothing behind the plastic cover.

Any ideas?

I know this is probably a "duh-type" answer, but is your jack secure? My jack makes some noise when not in there tight.

The jack idea is a good one, but I have already checked that. Plus, it really sounds like it's coming from way back by the tailgate.

The cold might have contracted the metal enough to loosen the latch mechanism slightly so that your rear hatch jiggles on the latch.

This was a common problem on my old Nissan Xterra. It would thunk over turns or bumps.

The latch mechanism was adjustable to tighten up the latch. Loosen a couple bolts, move the catch in and the hatch will close tight.
Not sure if that is applicable to the 4Runner but I'll throw it out there for you.

Anything sitting in your rear storage pocket(s)? (do these exist in a 98?)

Have you cranked your spare tire tight??? That has loosened on me befor with temp and tire pressure changes.

I haven't checked for adjustability on the rear hatch yet. I have thought about it, but just haven't had time to check into it.

I have checked the rear tire to make sure it is secure.

I really appreciate your thoughts, but for some reason I still think the clunk is coming from the interior. I have checked the storage compartment and removed the stuff inside. I was starting wonder if this plastic compartment was bumping into the fender, but the clunk sounds like it comes from both sides depending on which side the bump is on.

this sounds similar to what happened on my dad's car.

did you try the shocks or the joints in that area? his needed repair and tightening.
