clearing 33s on 15" rims
ok ok ok... I know clearance issues with 285s has been beaten to death, but this is a little different. I've got the 15" wheels, so for me to go with a typical 33" MT, I'd be looking at a 33/12.5-15. I did a search and found Marc Z's ordeal...
So, after reading all he's been though, I faced the fact that, for as much as I hate to say it, a 33/10.5-15 might be a better option for me. Fortunately, Swampers (TSL Radials and TSL Thornbirds) both come in this size (as do BFG MTs).
So, I should be able to clear 33/10.5-15 Swampers with OME HD (~3" lift) and a 1" BL, right (on 7" stock rims or 8" rockcrawlers)? Also, would I be shooting myself in the foot going with a relatively narrow 10.5" wide tire? I would think a 10.5" Swamper would do better than my 11.5" ATs, right?
Thoughts?
I'm running 33x12.50x15's on more offset 15x8 wheel.
The SAGA: After first installing, they would only rub under load. So it did require a bit of trimming. With the offset wheels(they stuck out further) the rubbing only occured at the back of the front fender. So the body seam is neatly folded over, to gain the needed clearance. The rubbing was gone until I added the ARB/winch combo. With the added weight = loss in lift. The rubbing was back. I added a custom spacer to level it off back to 2 1/2" of lift. Rubbing gone. But in the rear the tires wouldn't stuff into the wheelwell, the tires would hit the top of the fender instead. Thus, the 2" BL to complete the lift. NO RUBBING.
NOTE: ALL 33x12.50x15's are not created equal. Procomp's idea of 33's and Super Swamper 33's are almost and inch off.

If I were you I would make sure I got the correct gearing and lockers and say with 32's, that will get you alot further than 33's and too tall gears and no lockers.
If you want 33's, buy new wheels. We all had to do it, you do to. No-one seems to like the Black Rockcralwers after they get them, they are extremely heavy and seem to be harder to balance.
Go with a 16X8 Baja or Outlaw II or something like that and get yourself some MT/R's or Bridgestone Muds or Yokohma Muds in the 285/75/16 size. It really is the best size for he 3rd gen.
After Colorado I toyed with the 35/10.5/16 SSR Swampers, I have gears to pull them, but in the end, the 285's really work the best.
Especially since the "super secret SAW modification" with the IFS actually working.
Goldern Rule: You can hang all the nuggets on the truck you want but it's the stuff you don't see that really matters.

I think we should call this "Steve's Axiom" regarding 4Runner mods.
