Clay Bar uses

Has anyone had any experience using the Clay Bar. Does anyone have any positive/negative feedbacks about the Clay Bar to achieve a "new vehicle shine"?

See my website for the Detail Section, or via my sig file here.

Many posts on the forum about clay bar also if you input it into the search field.

Hate to say it, but do a search for clay bar. There have been quite a few discussions here.

I think there is a detail and polish forum on here somewhere. The "after" pics I have seen were great!

DANG! Corey was 2 minutes faster!

Corey- I got this idea from your post and I liked the after looks of the finished product.

Even for a smuck like me who can't detail a car worth of ˟˟˟˟˟, I found claybaring with soap of some sort, worked wonders in smoothing out my paint.

Claybar is awesome but if you're the anal type it will prove to be a large headache as you hit all the nooks and crannies.

I use mine to get stuff off that I cannot otherwise remove... But, I am too cheap to buy the machine and too lazy to do it by hand. I have done my hood and it does make a difference.

I've gotten good results with it also but plan part of a day to do it right.

I used to detail lots of cars at my old job.

Clay it and then wax it for an extraordinary shine

And then avoid all dirty roads, mud, etc...

Claying is easy for me. I clay both rigs twice each year then polish and wax. I clay by hand first using a spray bottle with water and a few drips of dish soap to break the surface tension then just run the claybar over the rig top to bottom, takes five minutes is all.

Works great every time, that paint is smooth as a baby's butt.

Talking Clay

Clay, why use clay? Using clay is stupid. Claying is a complete waste of time and makes your vehicle's paint look like crap!

I think claying a vehicle is the easiest and cheapest way to achieve that smooth finish, personally I don't think it makes a big difference in appearence, but if you're obsessed like me, then you want a perfectly smooth surface.

I clay using Meguairs quick detailer, hand wax with Zymol cleaner wax, and go over the finish with a micro fiber towel with quick detailer again. My truck is black, and the resutls are amazing.

But I do need to buy a rotary buffer and start getting better products for my clients cars.

Once again, if any of you like to keep your rig as clean as me (and a handful of other members here) you should join autopia and learn, learn, learn. I thought I knew just about everything about detailing, until I started reading on that site. I felt like a rookie that didn't know anything.

I thought claying was a gimick for years, until I finally tried it. I don't understand why it does what it does, but it sure does it well. It doesn't give a magic shine, it removes all the rough sticky stuff. The paint becomes silky smooth after claying. It's easy to do and doesn't take long. I clayed my wifes entire station wagon for the first time in about an hour. Subsequent clayings would take less time.

Wabbit- You seem to have a hard on about claying. Did you have a bad experience or something.

Clay took some water spots/cracks off my hood that NOTHING else would touch. I would deffinately recommend claying. You will not believe the difference in the texture of the surface.

Negative feedback:
It doesn't taste very good.

On a positive note, though, I found that plastalina modeling clay found at most craft stores is nearly identical in composition to the clay in Meguiar's and Mother's kit. And about 1/5th the price.

At least part of the day.

It takes me 10-12 hours to detail the exterior.
