Chevy 4.3 conversion into a 2nd gen
I am starting to think about what will power my 4runner when my 3.slow gives up. I want to go with the Chevrolet 4.3 litre. I want to know who has done this, what all was involved, and a guesstimated cost on what I need to tell my bank I need. I want to do this bad. Blue

I know a guy at work that had done that. He had a 91 4Runner that was sitting on 35's with a ProComp Stage 2 4" IFS lift and 3" body lift as well. His rig was so high up that the front drive shaft just wasn't there! It was a novelty to see since it was never dirty. He was running a 4.3 with headers. His rig got broken into and his 15K (he claimed) stereo system got stolen. He reported it to the insurance company and the totalled it and gave him $6000, and demanded that he give them the rig since they paid for it. He stripped it, and gave them the bare body and frame. He still has all the parts and I think that he is selling them all (since he refuses to install them into his wife's stock 92 4Runner) I will ask him next week if you are interested.

Why?
You can use a 3.4 and keep the auto that is on it, use an adaptor and run a single or dual gear driven case.
I think that getting the right gears will be a bigger improvement than the new engine with less work.

Wouldn't getting Chevy engine into Toyota will defeat the entire purpose of owning Toyota? I mean GM engines might be powerful, but what you're going to do when GM engine dies several years down the road?

I did the 350 conversion over 6 months ago and so far I have been very pleased with the results. But being as there are a ton of choices for types of powerplants to consider NOW If I had to do it over again I would definately go for the 3.4 liter, you don't have to worry about cooling issues, transmission's, front and rear driveline modifications etc etc. I'll have to admit it really was a unique project

Hi, I just wanted to let you know that I have an '84 runner and just put in an '88 4.3 Chev engine with new vortec heads, a larger cam and flat top pistons into her and WOW! The engine (rebuilt with the add on's) cost 1600.00 canadian. I've got a 9" lift and pushing 38's and still tons of power. With the larger cam it sounds like it's got a 350 in her, and she's peppy off the line to!! It was switched from manual to auto, and I love it! If you have any questions let me know! I am just a silly girl but spend alot of time working on my truck so I'll try and answer any q's you might have. I highly recommend doing this swap. I actually have another 4.3 engine that needs a bottom end re-build that you can HAVE, if you can figure out a way to get it.
