check engine light, how to use a reader?
hello everyone,
i just got a check engine light on my 97 4runner sr5. reading some posts here, apparently you can borrow a reader at autozone for a deposit. great, but how do i use this reader? toyota is charging me $135 just to bring it in for a look, so i'd prefer to use a diagnostic reader at autozone for free, but i have no idea what to look for and how to use it. any help is appreciated. thanks, dd

This is super easy. 
You borrow the reader, go out to the parking lot. Under your dash on the driver's side next to the console is a connector. That is your OBDII connector. Plug the end of the scan tool into that and hit "Scan" or whatever on the tool. Write down the code, and the brief description it gives you, then come back here.

The reading of codes for a 94 is pretty simple also, and only requires a paper clip and counting the flashes of the check eng. lt. Then coming back here for the code that the number of flashes means. If it's in the shop already, oh well, just for future reference.

dirk,
to clarify, the obd II sensor looks like a giant black parallel printer port-like thing. if you are sitting in the driver's seat, its right above your right shin...right behind the lower panel.

i love you guys, thanks for the advice. yeh, i did it, the obdii is super easy to use, and yes, it's my o2 sensor, so will work on it this weekend. thanks for everyone's help and autozone, in california does loan it out, you have to pay for it, but they credit you back the full amount, somehow it shields them from liability. nice. dd
