Is it possible to regear only the rear end of a 4x4 and still retain 4x4 use? say increase to 4:88 in the rear diff and remain stock in the front? Pros? Cons? thanks

No, not if you still want to use 4WD. There is a possibility that if you were just in deep sand or mud you could get by with it. The faster turning wheels would have to be able to slip and spin faster than the other set. If you were on an icy road and used 4WD you would be slipping all over the place as one set of wheels would be constantly slipping. If you hit a stretch of road with a little traction you would be tearing up your drive line real fast.

Yep, you gotta regear both or your ends will be turning at different speed ratios and your rig wouldn't move very far for very long in such a manner. Gotta do both ends.
