On my 02' I had to replace the canister. I had the P0446. Replaced the valve, came up with a P0440 and P0442 (small and big leak), replaced the gas cap and the leak codes were still coming on. Took it to Toyota and after 1.5 days they couldn't find a vacuum leak. They didn't charge me anything, but suggested a canister for $450 + labor! They also told me that they usually never go bad UNLESS you keep overfilling your gas tank. I bought the truck with this problem so I am positive that the previous owner kept overfilling it. When the pump clicks, STOP! Same as Rock Slide, I was able to find one off Car-Part.com for $50 shipped from NC to UT. It came off an 02' with 55K. Not one code since. When the dealer says "these never go bad" that is when I start looking at junkyards. Good thing they say that a lot about these 3rd Gen 4Runners.

U have to drop the charcoal canister that is under your spare tire on a 2001 4Runner. This canister has 4 bolts the 4th one is kinda hidden. U will have to disconnect your hoses 1st and your 2 electric connecters. Than there is another line connected on top U have to disconnect after U drop canister. Make sure U are prepared to do self taping on some of the rusty bolt that hold the canister up. Before U do any of this make sure your negative battery terminal is disconnected. P.S. I sprayed bust a nut on my bolts but 2 of them still snapped had to file, punch and drill and put self tapers in.

U do not need 2 buy a Vapor canister
I changed the switch on top of the canister and had the O Ring replaced on canister. Have a honest mechanic do a smoke test on the canister. That is how U can see if it leaks. I know there are very few honest mechanics, so just tell them U want a smoke test to see if canister is leaking. If it is I'll bet it is the O ring on the canister. This can be a real pain to change but with patience U can

I changed the VSV valve switch or whatever with no positive results, which O- ring are you referring to? I believe there is just one larger node or vacuum pack attached to the front end of the canister, I saw it and made sure to keep it intact and re-lubed it with silicone before re-installation.

If U have the vehicle smoked tested U will see were it is leaking. I had this done 4 free by a good friend. When he put the smoke tester on it he saw right away were the leak was coming from on the canister. It was the O-Ring on the canister which he changed. I had to put almost a 1000 miles on it to get the two monitors off before inspection. Since than I have been driving with no problems over 2500 miles and still working great. I think people are making a mistake when they buy the whole canister. He informed me the O-Rings get dry rotted and that it was good that I changed the VSV switch anyway.

PO446: Diagnosed to be gas tank rollover valve
I have read all threads on PO446. I took in my 2000 4Runner into dealer today and paid to have it diagnosed. This error code has been intermittent for 2 yrs. It only has one error code, PO446. They said everything is OK but they are 90% confident that the gas tank rollover value is leaking. It will cost $15 for parts and $500 for labor.
No one has ever written about a gas tank rollover valve. Could this really fix it?

I'd hate to drop the tank and replace this and it not be the problem. SOmewhere someone mentioned the O-rings on the vapor canister being the source of the problem. Wonder if you could just use RTV instead.

I have a 1999 4Runner V6 2wd and I just received the code P0446. I used to get a really bad fuel odor in the summer if I topped off, so I would just fill half a tank and it would keep the vapor pressure down, and my canister would not stink as bad; no CEL though. No that the weather is cooling down, I got a CEL, and when I checked it I got the code P0446. I checked my Hayes book but it is not very specific when it came to EVAP. Not sure if its the charcoal canister, the little vacuum sensor that travels over to another sensor through a tiny hose, or the sensor valve that travels to the top of my engine through a normal sized hose. I am told it could be the gas cap, one of those three sensors outside of my canister (all three have an electrical connection), or the canister itself. The canister seems to have valves inside of it too. Its a box shape with two cylinders on it with 6 hoses going in and out to many things. Everything is right there under my hood and accessible right behind the battery. What should I do... I refuse to take it to the stealership. I can fixed any thing on my vehicle with my Hayes book, but this one thing.
