I was looking for a place to mount a CB antennae on my 2001 4runner with chrome bumpers. I found a predrilled hole on the bottom side of the bumper halfway between the hitch and fender. It looks like a bumper mount would fit fine and extend the antennae away from the rear. With a quick disconnect I could access the hatch. Has anyone used this or have any idea why I should use it. Also I am assuming that grounding would be ok...

Get the door jam kit from firestik, and mount it inside the tailgate, next to the tail light. Thats where I put mine, works great. The kit also comes with like 18ft of coax

Well I really don't want to drill into the body and the bumper mount eliminates that.

i first bought a mount from radio shack, just a simple 4 bolt side mount one. i'm sure you could find it in one of my pictures in my sig. i drilled 4 holes in the bumper and but the front plate on, then attached the back plate to the inside of the bumper and voila.

I saw you had yours on the rear side of the bumper. On my 2001 there are several holes already drilled underneath. I am going to get a straight mount about 4-5 inchhes and use a single 1/2 inch or 5/8 bolt to attach it. I would then put a 5 foot antennae on it. I cannot understand why no one has tried this or maybe the holes are only on the 2001 chrome rear bumper.

You can see the holes on the underside of bumper. I found a bumper mount bracket at Fry's that I can straighten out and extend out about 2 inches from the bumper.

Looks like a good place but are you gonna be able to open the tailgate when you put the antenna off there?? Not sure if your tailgate folds down like my second gen but thats something I would check if I were to try that area.

from what i see the holes are on the very bottom, not on the side. i'd say no go, and buy the tailight mount that everyone else has, it's most popular for a reason

the bumper material is pretty thin, and if you're just looking to attach the antenna mount by 1 hole, i don't think a 5' antenna would be at all supported. the quick disconnect is a good idea, but i'm planning on putting my firestik next to the hatch- either 2/4 places to attach the mount to the body- plus the grounding is UBER-important, and by drilling into the sheet metal, it accomplishes that.

That's where I ordered the firestick door jamb mount. It's the only mount on that page listed under 'door jamb mount.'

I'm using a 4ft Wilson Flex fiberglass antenna.. so I can just push the antenna over when I open the hatch.

if you use a good piece of angle iron/aluminum, it'll hold up to a 7' skipshooter or a 1/4 wave whip. we bolted ours along the underside of the bumper using pre-existing holes and extended the mount out to the side of the 4R. This way, we could still utilize the rear hatch w/o having to disconnect the antenna.

if you need to go into parking garages, etc... you can use a quick-disco mount so you can just twist and pop the antenna off. the 5' antenna should fit into most garages, if mounted below the bumper (it doesn't stick up a whole lot over the roofline).

if you're going with a top load antenna, though, as long as the loading coil or tip is over your ground plane, you shouldn't have too much trouble with your SWRs.

Thanks for the replies. I will try to post a picture of the clamp I am looking at. It is at Frys and costs 7 bucks so it;s worth a shot. I will take their bumper clamp and straighten it out. It will be about four inches long and have a curved (think "u" shaped) lip to go over the inside of the bumper. It will be very similiar to the Firestick flat mount except for the curled lip to go over the inside edge. I will drill a hole in it to match the bumper and see what happens. If I use the left edge and grounding is an issue I can always run a wire to the frame. Best case is that it works with no holes in 4Runner. Worst case it I get to do what others have done. I will use the quick disconnect to open the tailgate
