can't shift to 4h on the fly
Help,
I have a '94 v6 4runner with 4wd. I am having a problem with shifting it into 4h on the fly. I does nothing, the gear shift goes to 4h and nothing happens. But if I stop and shift to 4L then to 4h it engages and works fine. Also even when it is engaged there is no light letting u know its in 4h...not sure if there is suppose to be. So anyone that has a fix for this please let me know.
Thanks

I bet there is something wrong with the switch in the transfer case that controls the ADD sleeve. Somehow the switch is not engaged properly when you shift into 4H, but it does work when you shift into 4L.

Thanks guys ... i did notice hearing a relay chatter in my glove box, but didn't think about seeing what was going on. I need to really study the info you suggested and see if it is maybe a vac hose, a relay or who knows. One thing is that it does work so I know that some vac hoses are working and some relays are working. I think I need to trace what is suppose to happen when I pull the lever when driving into 4h. Maybe its a switch in the knob or a short.

There are some other pictures on the 4x4Wire ADD page:
Or the Factory Service Manual would have a diagram. Most of the VSVs have 3 ports. One goes to a source of vacuum, one just vents to atmosphere (often has a filter on it - but may be missing) and the 3rd goes to the device being controlled. So if you can figure out where the other lines go to, ithe purpose of the missing line is usually apparent.
