Can't put back lateral control rod ... Help

I disconnected one end of the lateral control rod (the end that connects to the axle) to install new coil spring, now I can't put the end back. I have tried raising and dropping the axle to no avail. The end of the rod comes about 1/2 inch short to reach the point where i can insert the bolt back on.

Any tips?

I have 98 4runner,4wd,v6,5spd.

Thanks! You guys have been really helpful.

was it a lifted coil spring? if so, you need a panhard drop kit

no, i put in a pair of stock springs.

i couldn't connect the rod even without the springs. it seems like i need to push the axle a little bit to the other side, but that would require me to disconnect the control arms, which I am not sure if it's the wise thing to do.

How about asking two of your friends to push your truck's body (near the c-pillar) sideways while you reinstall the rod?

I had that problem when I did my lift... Try removing the whole thing and then install the *edit* "driver side on first then try to get the passenger side on..."

grimpy, "removing the whole thing", did you mean removing the control arms as well?

I use a ratchet strap or two to get things aligned. Careful though, don't let the strap break and whip you.

I mean to remove the bolts on both side... so you have that bar out.

the passenger side bolt is already on, the tough part is to get the driver side.

it seems ratchet strap is a good way to go.

Oops!!! I meant the driver side on first.... just edited my prior post...

since that side is welded to the frame, once you get the driver side on first... you should be able to raise/lower the axle to the point where it will line back up.

Thanks a bunch for those who responded. You guys have been great!

I had the rod in by putting the tires back on, removing the jackstands, and having two big guys sitting in the back (to lower the body a little further.)

Again, thanks a lot.
