Can a 99 4Runner Limited drive without an instument cluster?

I need to ship off my original (KPH) cluster with the new (MPH) cluster and get the mileage transferred from old to new cluster. Just wondering if I would be able to drive it without the cluster in the vehicle.

plans for figuring out how fast you are going?

don't know if it will or not... so how are they converting the Kilometer ODO to Miles ODO accurately and will you need to fille a mileage statement with the state? thought there was legalistic issues with this sort of thing...

I'm not concerned about how fast I am going. That is easy enough to guess.

I am sending it to a company that will legally document and do the conversion.

http://www.instrumentclusters.com/

I don't know about filling it will the state or anything. If I have to I will.

i was just curious, I know in Oregon we have to do a statement with the DMV.
maybe pull the cluster, mark all connections and make no contacts can ground themselves and cause a short and see what happens.
I don't think that having the idiot lights out of the circuit would cause CEL issues or anything for a short time.

What is the turn around for something like this? Was this 99 imported from Canada or something?

Red face

You might have a interesting time with the speedometer cable spinning .

i have also seen where gear oil is sometimes pulled up the cable if it was worn enough. Although never on a Toyota if I remember.

In any case it should be interesting

Turn around is two days. Then I have shipping from AR. to VA. and back. I think 8 days will do it.

The original owner, who I bought it from recently, bought it in Canada and drove back immediately. His wife is a Canadian. It is a Florida vehicle since then.

Usually the speedometer cable is pretty easy to deal with.

I am getting new Icons front and rear and a 1.5" body lift. I can just wait until the shop is doing that and send it off at the same time.

I was just kind of curious..

I don't think a '99 4Runner has a speedo cable. Manuals run off the ABS sensor, and slushboxes run off a tranny speed sensor.

it will run, however your car will not charge as your vehicle requires the charge light to work... plus, your air bag light will be on as well, and your SRS system will be disabled due to the SRS warning light not working...

oh, did i mention that's highly illegal?

it can be done without any permanent damage... but you will probably have a lot of warning lights to reset after...

Are you speaking in general or do you have specific knowledge re our Denso alts? Some alternators can self-excite once they get up to a higher RPM. The Hitachi I retrofitted into my 1966 140 Farmall is an example. I ran with no charge light for six months. Others will indeed not charge at all.
